Amtrak Auto Train SECRETS You Need to Know

Since 1971, the Auto Train has been shuttling people and their cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and even small boats between Virginia and Florida. Here's the full scoop on the history of the Auto Train including how it began, ended and was resurrected, what it costs today, and what you'll get when you travel on today's Amtrak Auto Train. Technically, you are not supposed to take the Auto Train without one person in your connected party paying to transport a vehicle. Although we cannot find that information on the official Auto Train website, apparently it's a thing that could lead to an invalidated ticket upon arrival. We did verify you cannot complete the booking online without paying for a vehicle.

We have heard stories of people calling Amtrak and getting tickets without an accompanying vehicle, saying they're connected with another party who has a vehicle. We've also heard about a sneaky (but pricey) workaround - pay for a motorcycle for $155 in addition to your $95 off-season coach ticket, and show up without the bike. We do not recommend this, and have not attempted it. But let us know if you have before we waste $240.
