This might sound like fiction, but it's a true story about the powerful Byzantine Empire.
Once upon a time, in the grand city of Constantinople,
the golden dome of the Hagia Sophia shined brightly under the sun.
The streets below were filled with busy crowds in the markets.
In those days, emperors in the Byzantine Empire came and went quickly,
like gossip in a crowded tavern.
But one emperor would always be remembered for something strange,
Justinian II, the emperor who lost his nose but refused to stay away.
In the throne room, Emperor Justinian II sat proudly on his grand throne.
Suddenly, the doors flew open and a group of rebels rushed in.
The leader pointed at Justinian.
Your time is up, the leader shouted.
Justinian stared at him sternly.
Only over my dead body, he replied.
The rebel leader chuckled.
Oh, we don't need you dead, Emperor.
We just need you without a nose.
The rebels grabbed Justinian.
Two men held him down, while the leader took out a sharp knife.
Years later, Justinian stood on the shores of Crimea, where he had been exiled.
His face was wrapped in bandages where his nose used to be.
Slowly, he uncovered his face, showing the terrible wound.
But Justinian was not a man to give up.
He wasn't ready to quit just because he had no nose.
He went to a group of Khazar merchants nearby.
They whispered among themselves.
That's him, the one without a nose, one of the merchants said quietly.
Justinian smirked.
And yet, I can still see you, he said.
He formed an alliance with the Khazars, but later heard a plan by the emperor to have him killed.
That night, Justinian sneaked into his tent and overheard an assassin whispering.
He'll never see it coming.
Suddenly, Justinian grabbed the assassin by the throat and strangled him.
I've had enough of being underestimated, Justinian said grimly.
Justinian escaped in a small fishing boat, rowing under the moonlight.
The sea was rough, but he kept going.
Not only did he survive, but he rowed all the way to Bulgaria.
Imagine a former emperor rowing like a simple fisherman.
In the Bulgarian throne room, Justinian knelt before the Khan, the ruler of Bulgaria.
His face showed both desperation and determination.
I need your army, Justinian said.
Help me take back my throne.
The Khan grinned and called for his soldiers.
We will march through the sewers of Constantinople, he said.
At night, Justinian and the Bulgarian army sneaked into the city through the dirty, smelly sewers.
As dawn broke, they stormed the palace.
But Justinian didn't stop there.
Not even a missing nose could keep him from his revenge.
Back on the throne, Justinian sat with a new golden nose strapped to his face.
His enemies were brought before him.
Did you really think a missing nose would stop an emperor?
Justinian asked with a smirk, laughing as his enemies trembled before him.
He ruled for six more years, leading his armies into battle with his shining golden nose.
His enemies and even his friends were afraid of him.
But like all strange stories, his reign ended once again, this time for good.
So, remember this.
In the Byzantine Empire, losing a nose was just a small problem on the way to becoming emperor again.
What's your excuse?
