Hello everyone, my name is Jennifer Davenport. I'm an interior designer and in today's video
I'm going to share with you some tips on how designers make a tree look fuller. All right,
before we get started, make sure you're following me on Instagram at jenniferdecorates and subscribe
to this channel. Before we jump in, I can assume if you're watching this that you love Christmas
and Christmas is the best time of the year. If you love decorating for others and you've even
thought about doing it as a side business, well I've got a course that teaches just that. This
course teaches you how to make money doing Christmas design and I share a lot of my secrets.
You just need to click here and you can watch the video that will tell you more about it.
Okay, let's jump into the video. I attend the Atlanta market every year and I go there to see
all the beautiful new Christmas designs and trends. I actually made a video about the 2024
trends this year. Just click here to watch that. Now one of the things I love about going to market
is I get to see fully decorated trees. I get to watch reps showcase maybe a different way how to
add ribbon to a tree. So today I'm going to share some of those secrets with you. Tip number one
is to fluff your tree. I know this might seem obvious but you'd be surprised at how many people
do not do it. It is a pain to do it but it makes a difference. You want to straighten each and
every little branch. This will not only immediately make your tree look fuller but it will also give
your decor something to cling to in some of our later steps. So don't skip this step. It's super
important. Now today I'm not going to fully decorate this tree. I am just giving you tips on how to
make a tree look fuller. I will be having a video coming out shortly on how designers do decorate
an entire tree. Tip number two is gold ornaments. You want to get an assortment of gold ornaments.
Get the shadow proof ones, the inexpensive ones. You can get them at Dollar General. I know Hobby
Lobby carries them on sale but I'm going to show you how I'm going to add them to the tree.
Here's why we're going to use some gold ornaments. You're going to put a hook on them and we're going
to put them as close to that base of the tree as possible and what that's going to do it's going
to do several things. One, it's going to camouflage the total base of the tree. Two, it's going to
reflect your Christmas lights once they're on the tree and it's just going to fill up this tree and
you will hardly really see them once you get everything else on here but believe me it makes
a difference. So I love this tip. It's inexpensive. I got a whole bucket of these gold ornaments for
ten dollars and even if I don't use all of them in the tree I guarantee you I'm going to use them
somewhere else in my Christmas design. Just remember to put your ornaments into the base of
the tree and I will take the ornaments all the way down the tree. Remember you're going to add a lot
of other elements to your tree so you're not going to see those. They're just going to be in the
background providing depth and light. Tip number two is to add garland to your tree. Now this can
be fairly inexpensive. Let me tell you, I have garland that looks pretty bad. I'm not going to put
it on my mantle or anywhere else but I'm not throwing it away because this is just the type
of project I'm going to utilize it for. So what we're going to do is put that garland on the tree
keeping it close to the edge of the branches. Another reason this looks beautiful in a tree is
you have another texture of greenery that you've added. You want to take that garland and just kind
of push a little bit of it back into the base of the tree and let the other come out and pull
each branch just straight out. That makes it look like how a real tree would grow but look at how
beautiful that is to have two other textures in the tree. Here's a super fun garland you can put
in your tree. This is velvet holly with little gold berries. Now this comes from my store and a
lot of you don't realize I have a store. So if you ever visit Nashville, I'm about 30 miles from
Nashville, it's JD's all about home, come see me. I would love it. All right same principle just going
to tuck this one into the tree. One of the reasons I like the idea of using a garland like this is
first of all I love velvet. The velvet leaves take up a lot of visual space on the tree but this is
a really unique way to get a designer look on your tree that you're not going to see anywhere else.
Tip number four add florals. This is a fabulous way to make your tree look a lot fuller and to
add some color. Now when you're going to put your florals in there make sure you spread them out
each little petal looks really pretty and perfect and then you're just going to set it into the tree.
Now when you're looking for florals and you're shopping at somewhere like Hobby Lobby, look in
two different places. Look in the pick aisle because they have some there but they also have
them in the stems and maybe you can get one or two magnolias or poinsettias off of one stem.
Now when you're putting them on the tree one of the things that I like to do to help keep
them spread out evenly is what I call creating a diamond pattern. So think of a diamond if I put a
floral here and here the next one I'm going to put is over here and that third one is going to be
right there and you continue that pattern all the way around your tree and your florals will be
spaced out perfectly. Tip number five is layering stems. I learned this at market and this rep I
loved that he taught me this. So he says pick about three stems and I'm going to do gold on that one
and this stem I chose cranberry and green and then another leafy stem that has a little bit
of that burgundy in it. So you put them right on top of each other and then you want to take a zip
tie. They're your best friend when it comes to Christmas decorating and I've just got a really
small one and we are just going to zip tie these florals together. Now let me tell you something
else that's great about doing this. You can do this and put all your florals together and maybe
next year you want to do a different design well reuse these and repurpose them somewhere else.
Now once you have them all together the trick he taught me was first of all spread them out
and reach under and pull through that bottom stem poke it up like that and pull that second stem
and just fluff it up don't let it lay flat. Then what you do is you can trim this if you want to
I'm going to leave it not cut and you set it inside your tree. I love to have anything I'm
adding to the tree a little bit longer than the branches of the original tree so it gives it that
whimsical look but look how beautiful that looks on your tree and I would do this again that diamond
pattern I would put these stems together all over the tree. This is one way to get a beautiful
designer look. Another trick to adding stems to a tree is instead of going straight into the tree
like this take that stem you can even bend it a little bit and come in to the tree at an angle.
That number one it gives it a different look on the tree but really when you come in at an
angle you're seeing more of that stem and it takes up more of the tree and that's how you
make your tree look fuller. Tip number six is accessories. One of the neat things I saw at
market was adding accessories to a tree. Some people love to create a themed tree but you can
add all kinds of accessories from owls to large stars to big giant bells they really fill up a
tree and give it so much character. You can get really creative go to the craft store and start
perusing the aisles and see what stands out to you and it can be something unique that you can
add to your tree. One of the ways you can add your accessories to a tree is by using floral wire.
My very favorite is 18 gauge that is very pliable but still really tough to hold your accessories
in the tree. But another way is to utilize those branches in the tree and I'm going to take this
little green branch and just wrap it around the owl's leg. So see how adding an accessory that's
about eight to ten inches really adds some charm to this tree and really makes it look fuller.
These are my top six designer tricks for making a tree look fuller. Don't forget about my design
Christmas course. You have the link in the description of this video and be sure to watch
