Grizzly Encounter during Hyperphagia

Grizzly Bears

There's a grizzly right there.
I can barely see the hump in the back moving through the grass.
He's close and doesn't move at all.
Okay, I'm gonna have to start backing up here.
He keeps coming in my direction.
Look at the hump on that grizzly.
He is huge.
There, you notice he hasn't detected me.
That's because the wind is blowing my direction into my face so he can't smell anything.
Okay, he still doesn't see me so I'm backing up.
Okay, I've been backing up.
He's still coming in my direction.
I'm going back.
I don't really want to try to go down around him because that's way too close.
He hasn't detected me yet.
He's still coming but he's right in the corner of those trees right there.
I can't see him right now but I just saw him.
Okay, grizzly got pretty close and he finally saw me.
He stood up.
He stood up a couple of times and looked at me and saw me so I'm heading back out.
So the grizzly was right down there.
We discovered him there.
He went through the trees to come back up this way and the grizzly discovered I was going that way.
Also finally he stood up three times.
So he stayed along the tree line and went back around to where we were originally.
So I'm going to go stand over here.
So the grizzly bears are in what they call hyperphagia mode where they're putting on fat
and supposedly eating like crazy.
They'll eat anything they see that's not true.
Grizzly bears behave towards people the same this time of year during hyperphagia as any other time of year.
They're eating machines.
They eat all the time.
All summer long when I see them they're eating and he's doing the same thing right now.
He's just eating.
He doesn't know his body is changing into a mode where it's putting on fat instead of muscle.
So their behavior is the same and if you see a grizzly bear this time of year they're not going to eat you.
But of course I was taking all the precautions and moving away.
He was really close there.
He was less than 100 yards when I spotted him in the grass right there.
So that was a great bear sighting.
Well, I'm probably three quarters of a mile away from where I saw the grizzly.
Maybe 50 yards to 75 yards.
It's kind of hard to tell when it first happens.
But that really makes for an exciting hike.
I knew this would be a good day.
The weather is perfect.
About 40 degrees.
I saw two elk in here this morning when I was hiking.
But they ran into the trees and I couldn't get them on video fast enough.
So there's a lot of elk around here too.
So you can see all these.
I think they're pocket gophers.
All these pocket gopher dives everywhere.
That's grizzly food.
You can see everywhere in here.
You saw how fat that grizzly was.
They have a lot to eat up here.
This is a perfect grizzly habitat.
Here are these fresh elk tracks I was telling you about.
The elk I saw earlier.
What a beautiful day out.
It's a great area now.
The habitat of the black bear.
Probably a black bear could have been a grizzly.
Just as easy.
You can see where he pulled that top piece up.
The ants.
A little area where they're squirrels.
They cut the pine cones off on top.
Pick them up and then they like to cache them.
He's got them all neatly stacked up there for the winter.
