Oskar Piastri won his first DHL Fastest Lap Award at the Miami Grand Prix
on a day when his McLaren team once more took to the top step and tasted the victor's champagne.
The papaya cars qualified P5 and P6, with winner-in-waiting Lando Norris one place better
than his Australian teammate. However, it was Piastri who got off to a flyer at Lights Out,
making up three places in as many turns, muscling his way past Carlos Sainz,
something the Spaniard would look to rectify later.
Oskar caught and passed the other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to run P2 in the early stages,
and when leader Max Verstappen pitted, he briefly led the race.
When Logan Sargent and Kevin Magnussen came together, the resultant safety car
benefited Norris, the Briton pitting and exiting in the lead, which he never relinquished,
taking his first Grand Prix win on his 110th start.
Piastri continued to fight with Sainz, the pair running side by side at Turn 11,
the Spaniard furious, convinced he'd been wronged.
Their battle continued for a few more laps, and then the pair touched at Turn 17,
as Sainz slid past. Damage to Piastri's front wing meant a trip to the pits,
and sadly, a huge drop down the order. With a new nose and fresh rubber, he snatched the
lap away from his teammate on lap 43, denying him the extra point.
Sector 1 was completed in 30.384 seconds and the next in 34.629.
With the final section done and dusted in 25.621, he had a time over the line of 1 minute 30.634.
So Piastri joins Fernando Alonso Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen on the 2024 DHL
Fastest Lap Award leaderboard, as Formula 1 heads to Europe for the next race,
at one of the great circuits, Imola.
