All right, welcome to the Moxie Skates YouTube channel. My name is Estrogen and today I'm going
to be teaching you how to shoot the deck or pistol squat on your roller skates. So there's a
step-by-step process to getting into this position. First, I'm just going to demo what it looks like
with momentum. You're probably familiar with shooting the deck or pistol squatting. It is a
squat on one foot with the opposite foot facing forward. And there's a really simple way to get
there, but it does require that you're flexible in your hamstrings and your quads and your groin.
So there's a couple of steps that you may, there's a couple of stretches that you may want to do
before getting started. The first one that I would suggest is this stretch. So you get
into like a straddle with your knees bent behind you and then you're going to go onto your forearms
and you let your hips spill forward and then you just kind of move your hips side to side.
And you can also rock your hips forward and backward. All right, now my groin is all stretched
out. I'm also just going to sit back on my heels so that I can get a nice quad stretch.
Oh, that feels so good. Okay, and then I'm going to hit what they call in yoga a masala squat.
And you get into a nice deep knee bend and you let your booty go all the way down between your legs
and then you put your elbows to the insides of your knees. And then we're going to just
practice falling because the pistol squat or shoot the duck is the best way to practice and
learn how to fall. So when we fall to our rear ends, we're going to want to pick a cheek right
or left. You don't want to go straight to the center because that's where your very sensitive
tailbone is. And if you hit your tailbone, you can bruise it. And to heal a tailbone,
it requires a very long period of time of not sitting, which can be very irritating. So you
want to make sure that you don't bruise your tailbone because it's a real pain in the butt.
All right, for the pistol squat or shooting the duck, there's two names for it. The reason why I
the name shoot the duck is because when you're in the position, you look like a rifle. But I don't
really shoot the duck. I don't really shoot ducks. I definitely don't shoot ducks. I don't do any
hunting. So I'm used to calling it pistol squatting from fitness. All right, so the best
way to get into the shooting the duck pistol squat position is to grab a hold of your toe
stops for stability first. So that's going to mean that you can touch your toes. You grab a
hold of your toe stops here. If you can't touch your toes, just start here with a nice micro bend
and just practice this forward fold position. Eventually, you'll be able to grab your toes. Now
remember, when we're not when we're doing this without momentum, it's very easy to fall. So when
we fall, we're going to pick a cheek when we fall. So you're going to lower your booty to your heels,
getting into this little tiny ball or little squat. And then when you're comfortable with
momentum, you're going to shift your weight onto one side and then let your other foot roll out and
away from your chest body. And then you can hold on to the toe stop sticking this foot out in front
of you, or you can let go. My friend Stacey from RollerFit in Australia, Stacey always told me,
oh, it's weak if you hold the toe stop. And I thought that was so funny because like,
I don't know, I just like the style of it. I think it looks cool. All right, and then to get up from
it, you're going to reverse the whole motion. So you're going to bring, and I lost it. So that's
what I mean by it's a really great way to learn how to fall. So I'm just going to start all over
again. So you get into this nice forward fold with a micro bend in your knees, grab a hold of
your toe stops for stability. And then you're going to let your booty come to your heels,
shift your body weight, let one foot roll out in front of you and away from your upper body.
And then you can let go if you've got the balance and stability, and then you can reverse the motion
by bending your knee and then putting your foot down and then holding onto your skates and
reversing the whole motion and standing up. All right, so it's a bit challenging to do without
any momentum. Speed is your friend, just like speed is your friend when you're going over little
cracks out on the sidewalk. Speed is your friend when you're doing the shoot the duck. I'm just
going to show you backwards. You can choose to grab a hold of the right or the left foot,
whichever one is more comfortable for you. So you're going to get into this forward fold,
make sure your knees aren't locked, grab a hold of your feet for stability, separate your skates
to hip width apart, lower your booty down to your heels, shift your body weight to one side,
and then let your foot roll away from you. I caught myself there. And then you're going to
reverse this step by bending the straightened leg and putting it back behind you, and you reverse
the whole thing. Grab a hold of your skates, use your skates to stand back up, and then stand.
Do we got it? Show me an emoji telling you whether you've got it or not. We can move on,
or we can do it all over again. Do they got it, Miguel? They have it? I asked them to use emojis.
Oh, there's a delay. I gotcha. Miguel's coaching me. What about now? Do they have it?
It's happening? Everyone's got the shoot the duck? Are we ready to add some momentum and wheels
under our feet? All right, so doing it with speed is actually much easier than doing it just
standing. So I like to, if I have a small space like you might be working with right now, you're
just going to push off with a little toe stop roll to get yourself some momentum. Then you're going
to, not quickly, so just, you don't need to rush all the steps at once. That'll probably get you
to your rear end the fastest. You're just going to want to get to the steps that you can with the
space that you have. So if you only get to here, that's cool, but if you can get all the way down,
that's also really good. So we're getting, grabbing a hold of this toe stops for stability,
and then lowering our booty to our heels. With momentum, we're going to stick a foot out.
We can hold on to it, or we can let go of it. You can hold on to it with the other foot,
but the more space you have, the easier this is going to be. Let's just go over the reversing of
it. So we lower down, grab a hold of our toe stops, get down, put our foot out. Now to reverse it,
we're just going to, I mean, to stand, to get up from doing the shoot the duck pistol squat,
we're going to reverse all the steps. So you bend this knee that's sticking out, place the foot
underneath of your hips again, and then use your hands to push off of your skates, standing back
up. Always keeping a nice little, a gentle knee bend. All right, that's it. That's how you shoot
the duck. That's how you pistol squat. Now we're going to take it on the road. So I'm going to go
put my mask on. We're going to close this right here. I got it. I'm going to grab my hand sanitizer.
We're going to lock up the house. Yeah, we're going over to a ledge so that we can jump up
onto a ledge and shoot the duck. We're in Long Beach, California, and it's a sunny day. I'll hold it.
Let me get my, trying to get my mask around my ears. I made this one.
You got it, Tiana! Yes! We are going to Pizzanista. So Pizzanista is a skateboard-owned
pizza shop, and there is a skatable public ledge out front. However, if somebody else is skating
there, we are just going to find another ledge or something else to jump up on.
Yeah, it is really cool. Skateboarding, Long Beach is a very skaty city. It's very flat.
So lots of skateboarders and BMX riders and roller skaters all live here because they use
their skates as a way of transportation. Oh, thank you, Joanna. Miguel mostly, right?
They said you're cute. He's smiling. You can't tell that he is smiling. Yeah, holding hands on
skates is the best. It's like, especially if your partner knows how to skate, because if you like,
they can catch you. Not, like, catch you with both hands, but, you know, get you going again.
Or, like, tell you what's up if someone's coming. You know, when you're talking on the phone and
skating. It's always good to have someone that's got your back. You live in Orange. Orange is so
beautiful. There's so many trees, like, well, Orange and Trilogy trees there. Who's typing all
this? Our Moxie staff. Our staff has really grown in the last couple of weeks. It's been amazing.
The elves?
Yeah, the whole staff family. Staff is such a weird word, huh? The skaters. Moxie-licious.
The skate family. There's so many terms for it.
Anyone have any questions? This is 7th Street.
This spot right here was so good until they put the railing up.
You could ride this, like, ramp and then go over this little garden here. It's so cool.
Uh, if you want to, you can. Sure.
Watch the glass. Glass me. Okay.
I always like to see if I can go right to the edge and stop.
Probably not the best street to do that. Hey, what's up?
How should we cross?
Hey, what's your hand sanitizer smell like at home? This one's really good.
What is this one? Lavender chamomile.
Okay, I'm just gonna go down to the next one. Oh, yeah? It's way farther, yeah? It's okay.
No, I'll just do what you say. It's good. It's all good. All right, are you gonna hit this ledge,
Miguel? Whoa! You want to race? You want to race? No? Okay. I don't like to compete either.
Hello. Ain't nobody here has a pizza needs to ledge. All right, I am not falling today.
Holy mackerel. All right, we are gonna demo this, teach it, and then get out of here, huh?
Make sure my toe stops turn solid. Okay, you wanna hold this for me? You take care of it.
Thank you. All right, so if you're gonna jump up onto a ledge and do a shoot the duck,
be mindful of which way you really like to turn. So I am more comfortable turning to my right.
I can turn to my left, but I'm so much more comfortable going right. So when I'm going
up onto this ledge, I'm gonna put my left foot up here because my right foot is really stable here.
Let's see. That is my more natural way, huh? Yeah. So if I were to just test it out,
I'm gonna put my foot up, put some weight in it, and then step off
before I just go right for it and jump. Try the other side, right? I used to think that I had to
jump that high in order to get onto a ledge, but it's not the case.
Per the demonstration, you can just step up. All right, now I know that I'm really comfortable
just stepping up and rolling and even jumping off and landing. So what I'm gonna do is get into a
nice deep knee bend and go right into a tuck jump and jump off. When I'm landing off of an obstacle,
I spot the landing forward. So where I wanna land is where I go, not right at the end of the ledge.
So I account for the amount of momentum I'm gonna continue through the landing.
And then once I'm comfortable doing the tuck jump, I'm just gonna go right into it.
Step down with both feet. Okay, I'll try both of those on the opposite side.
So I jump up and jump off. Okay, now I'm gonna jump right into it.
That time I didn't jump off, I felt more comfortable stepping off.
Anyone have any questions about that? Can I see?
Anyone have any questions? All right, I see that some people are saying that it's a little scary.
So what I would suggest is just practicing the landing. So start at the top. Here you go.
Start at the top and then just practice jumping off because that may be the scary part for you.
When you land, you wanna be in a nice knee bend. So knees both bend. Huh? Yeah, like you're sitting
in a chair, Miguel says. So just practice jumping up, knee bend, and jumping off, knee bend.
Then you can add the fancy shoot the duck. Jump up, knee bend, jump down.
Once you're comfortable with doing that, you jump right into the shoot the duck.
All right, I think that's everything I got for that one.
You have two footed jumps, one footed hops.
The wheels I'm using are the beach bunny wheels. Yeah, the seat of the roller rink is a really
great one. Skate related strengthening tips, I would suggest doing yoga. We have free Mondays,
free yoga on Mondays. KidAce teaches on Instagram at five o'clock every single Monday.
Uh-oh, the Funday wheels work on all roller skates.
All right, the ticket really is yoga, right, Avon? All right, I think that's all we got for today.
Yeah, any other questions? Should we sign off? Is there anything I missed?
Don't go. All right, Emily, transitions. Funday wheels are there. Do all bearings like the,
yes, no, only eight millimeter bearings, but almost all skateboard bearings will work.
All right, they want to see the back flip, so I don't know. We're going to need to find a nice
space for it. How do I jump without pain in my back? Strengthen your lower back with squats.
Man, I shouldn't make my own masks, but squats will strengthen your lower back.
All right, I'm going to do the backhand spring on the sidewalk. All right, will you still love
me if I don't land it? I'm going to go this way. I'm going to go this way. All right.
Ready? This is a good one. Is mom watching? I'm going to do it.
Miguel's mom, are you watching? All right, because I don't want to scare her.
Okay, here we go. A promise is a promise. I'm going to go for it.
One without the hat? Okay, can you wear my hat?
Okay, I better not be scaring mom now. What do you think? So I'm doing this because yesterday
we got to 200 likes. So if you like the flip, like the video. Here we go. All right,
thank you so much for watching the Shoot the Duck Beginner's Tricks Tutorial. Please remember to
like, comment on the video, and ask any questions that you may have left that you weren't able to
ask in the chat. I read every single one of the comments. I love them, and I see you coming back.
So thank you so, so much. Silver and Mystique Sunrising, I really love all your comments.
I'm really getting to know you virtually, and it just feels so good to have people to
talk to during this weird time in the world. I'm not going to be teaching the back handspring
anytime soon, unless y'all ask for it. And if you do ask for it, then
we'll do the back handspring off skates first, then we'll do them on skates. All right, I hope
you learned something today. Thank you very, very much. I love you. I mean, I love you,
and now I'm going to sanitize you. Bye.
