Walking around the city of Seoul and trying out some street food. Neither of us have been to Korean in over 25 years so we were both excited to visit again.
Oh, look at that. Okay, that one's different.
Thank you.
That is a crispy pork.
I think it's kimchi. It has a kick because it's kimchi.
Good day, everybody. Greetings from Seoul, Korea.
Oh my god, I can't believe we've been here for about six days already.
It's our last day and we had a blast.
Korea has exceeded our expectations in every single way.
Anyway, today we're going to walk around the city.
We're going to go eat some street food because we've seen so much street food here in Korea.
It's so exciting. You guys know how much I love street food.
And we're also going to go to a historical place as well.
A world heritage site and then whatever comes our way today.
It's going to be a chill day today and hope you guys enjoy this video.
So we're walking along Dongho-ro and this is very near our hotel.
We're staying in the Dongdaemun area.
And the area around the hotel is pretty industrial and it's full of markets.
But because it's Sunday, I think most of the shops are closed.
So I'm assuming the markets are closed on Sundays.
I'm sure that Gwangjang Market is open though.
We're actually walking towards Gwangjang Market.
We went there twice on this trip and it's one of our favorite markets.
And because this trip was only six days and it feels like it's our first time here.
The last time we were here, both of us, it was before we met.
So it was at least 30 years ago or 20 something years ago.
So it was a very long time and things have changed.
So yeah, the city has modernized a lot.
Of course, you can't really tell.
Oh shit.
Oh my god, there was a car accident.
Oh my gosh.
Oh shit.
Sorry guys.
Yeah, so that was the first time I've actually seen a crash in front of me.
I'm not gonna take footage of that.
But the lady was okay and we don't know who was in the wrong.
But yeah, everything's okay.
She's fine.
Her car is totaled though.
Yeah, wow.
Okay, so this is Gwangjang Market.
So it's like walking distance from a hotel which is perfect because we love this place so much.
And it's Sunday so it's very very full of people right now.
Yeah, it's so good.
I mean if you like food, I mean this is where you have to come.
It's full of authentic Korean food.
It's so nice.
And this is what the market looks like.
Okay, let's walk through the marketplace to get to the other side.
We have to go through here anyway.
So these are all the food stalls here.
You know, Gwangjang Market is not only about food.
If you go to the side streets, like away from this central street,
you'll find a street with clothing, more like a wet market area.
Oh, this is the famous place.
She was on Netflix.
So this place is probably the longest queue for food.
And don't worry, we filmed there.
We had to.
We had to, right?
So that's coming up on top of it.
So stay tuned for that.
And you can buy souvenirs here.
So all the food stalls are in the center like this.
And you can eat freshly made bibimbap which is so good.
We actually had that.
You can get sashimi, tteokbokki, all kind of good stuff.
I just sit out here and it's...
Look at this.
It's very crowded now.
We'll get all that food.
Do you guys like Korean food?
I do.
And then we're coming to the center area.
And this area has a lot of stalls selling mung bean pancakes.
These mung bean pancakes here, we had these twice already.
They're so good.
And they're pretty healthy and filling as well.
I'm just seeing if I can walk through here.
So if you want less of a crowd, that's the mung bean pancake.
Look.
Those are the mung beans.
And then that's the mill that grinds down the mung beans.
And then you have this batter here with bean sprouts.
And then it's fried up to a crisp.
They are delicious.
And then...
Oh, the other thing I wanted to point out are these seats here that you sit outside.
It's quite warm today.
But when it's cold, it's totally fine because the seats are warm.
They're warmed up.
And as you can see, it's really, really crowded today.
Like, it's difficult to walk.
Oh, and then one more stall down this street.
I think this is the donut shop.
Amazing donuts.
We had it twice.
OMG, so good.
Get through this crowd here.
Okay.
And then there's another line for the donuts.
It's such a popular place.
So this is the donut stand, guys.
They make it right in front of you.
The guy is kneading the dough and he deep-fries it here.
This is a very famous and popular donut shop.
And this is the humongous line for the donuts.
Look, the line starts all the way down there.
But don't worry, guys.
We filmed all of this for TabiEats.
So check that out.
Okay, and talking about street food.
Why not have something?
You want to have...
You want to try this one or something else?
Manju?
Oh, mandu.
Oh, okay.
Let's go get mandu.
So I talked about, you know, like the fact that there are so many...
What?
Bun.
Okay.
I talked about the fact that there are so many street food in Korea.
In Seoul, at least.
And one thing that we wanted to try is this stall coming up here.
They sell these baos.
So let's get a couple of these here.
Right here.
This is the bao shop where all the steam is coming from.
They also sell mandu, the dumplings here.
Like this.
But we're gonna get the baos, I think.
Okay.
Oh, so much steam.
These are the baos here.
I think the minimum order is three.
And they have three types, I think.
Okay.
Yay!
We were able to order...
Oh, look at that.
Okay, that one's different.
That must be the sweet one, I think.
And these are the savory ones.
Oh, that's so piping hot.
Looks good.
감사합니다.
Okay, so this is what we got.
So that's probably the maybe kimchi one.
And then that one is the regular one.
And that one must be the red bean.
So this is...
So these are quite small.
Look, it fits in the palm of my hand.
But that's perfect.
Okay.
I'm gonna bite into it.
Itadakimasu.
Mmm.
How's that?
Mmm.
This reminds me of the filling in mandu.
There's definitely garlic.
Lots of chives and onions.
And the bun is really fluffy.
And it's very thin as well.
And this one is the red one here.
I think it's kimchi.
You see?
Mmm.
Yeah, kimchi.
That's kimchi.
Yeah, so same veggies, but with the addition of kimchi.
And it definitely has a kick because it's kimchi.
It's good.
Finally, this is the red bean one.
So this one's bigger, as you can see.
All right, this one looks like this.
This is the bumpy bean.
Mmm.
Oh, that's comforting.
You know what this tastes like?
This tastes like red beans.
But it reminds me of...
It's definitely azuki.
It reminds me of oshiruko.
That's what it tastes like.
The sweetness is like oshiruko, like the red bean soup.
Mmm.
Oh, I like that.
Okay, here we are at the next place.
Just about a 10-minute walk from that market.
We've arrived here at this World Heritage Site.
Not really sure what this place is called yet.
Sorry.
We'll find out when we get there.
All right, guys.
So we are here at our next destination.
This is a tomb of a king in the past.
And it's a World Heritage Site.
And this is the entrance.
You know, one thing I found about Seoul, at least for me,
is I have to have a balance.
You know, I can't just go to Myeongdong and Dondaemun fashion area.
I get kind of bored after a while.
So I have to mix cultural things in.
I found out that I really enjoy checking out the old markets in Seoul.
That's one of my favorite things to do here.
And I also love these cultural places.
The other day, we went to the old palace.
It was amazing.
It was serene and just beautiful.
It's just so beautiful.
Church.
And it's really, really beautiful.
You know, it's such a beautiful day today.
And although it's winter, it's almost like autumn.
It's really beautiful.
We got a little English explanation here.
So yeah, like I said, this is a shrine.
It's a state shrine.
And this is where the spirit tablets of deceased kings and queens are enshrined.
And Korea is the only place that has preserved the royal shrine
and continues to perform these ancestral rites.
And that's the main reason why Dongmyo, which is here,
was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.
Now I understand.
So the main area was actually closed.
There are two spirit chambers.
The main one is closed for renovations.
And this is the annex.
This is the second one because they ran out of space.
So this one has room for 16 spirits.
So this is the second spirit chamber called the Yongjong.
Let's walk towards the building.
It says you're not supposed to walk here in the center
because that is where the spirits walk.
So avoid that.
And then this is as far as you can come.
So there are 16 different spirit chambers here.
Our building is so beautiful.
It's really nice.
Guys, so here we are at Seoul Station.
We went back to the hotel a little bit.
What?
Rolling tongue?
Okay, we're trying to figure out what this is here.
Is it pork?
Is it chicken?
Not sure.
Okay, so we're here at Lotteria.
We're gonna try something here.
Okay, it's a pork.
Creamy garlic or creamy seasoned spiced chicken.
Iced Americano.
And I got the Pepsi Zero.
And if you choose to eat it, they give you this proper cup.
This is a deep fried pork.
And this is the creamy seasoned sauce.
Okay, and that is the crispy pork.
I'll dip it into this seasoned sauce.
That's pretty good.
That is pretty good.
The pork is tender.
Super meaty and it's crispy.
The sauce is like, I don't know.
I'm not sure if it's like creamy.
It's kind of ketchup-y.
Oh, that's gochujang.
I thought it was gonna be spicy, but it's not spicy at all.
That's pretty good and very, very unique to find in a fast food place.
All right, guys.
We are back in Dongdaemun.
We were planning to go to Myeongdong to have some street food.
Satoshi, I think he came down with a cold.
He's not feeling well.
I'm okay.
I'm just tired.
Yeah, you're just tired?
But you took some medicine.
So anyway, yeah, I'm a little bit worried.
So we came back to Dongdaemun and there's some street food here.
As you can see, there's a line of street food here.
Thinking we'll get something like a bite to eat here.
Dongdaemun is like a fashion district, I believe.
There are a lot of fashion buildings.
You can get clothing for like very good price.
Okay, let's see.
They have some sweets on that side.
It's mostly sweets, I think.
They have some...
Yeah, there are some sweets and there's some oden as well.
Okay, so I think maybe get the...
How about that one?
Do you want the custard thing or do you want like the ten won bread?
So we get the ten won bread and I think I would like to try
the oden because I've never had it in Korea.
I'm looking like that guy's like pouring soup.
Okay, let's do that.
Oh, yeah, there's...
Cheese, red beans, mozzarella cream cheese, sweet potato mousse, mozzarella cheese custard.
Whatever you want.
Okay.
Wow.
So that is the oden.
That's 1,000 won.
Smells good.
Oh, mozzarella.
Okay, so that is the oden.
I'm gonna get two of them.
Okay, here we go.
We have some sauce here.
Pour it on top and I guess we can take some soup as well.
So let's take some soup.
That's my oden, my fish cake.
I gotta say, I'm a huge fan of the Korean oden.
It's so gentle tasting but it's really, really flavorful.
It's good, right?
In Seoul, I've heard in Seoul, they have this type of oden.
But in Busan, they have much variety.
Really?
Really? In Busan, they have more variety.
So in Seoul, it's basically this fish cake.
But in Busan, there's like other ingredients.
We have oden in Japan, too.
But I think the flavor is stronger in Japan.
Like the soy sauce flavor is stronger.
So we both like this, the subtleness of the Korean oden, you know?
It's a good fish taste.
Yes, it does.
Like fish cake.
Not fishy, though.
Not fishy.
This one, 10 won bread.
In Japan, we have 10 yen bread.
But origin is this 10 won bread in Korea.
So I haven't eaten 10 yen bread in Japan.
So I'm very, very looking forward to try this.
Itadakimasu.
This one.
Inside, it's custard and mozzarella cheese.
So it's very firm.
It's freshly baked in front of us.
Very hot.
And sweet pancake taste.
It's like a sweet pancake.
The outside is crispy.
This crispy texture is very firm.
And inside, it's a fluffy pancake and custard and mozzarella.
This is my first experience.
I'm satisfied.
No, like very sweet pancake.
Like batter.
Oh, why is it so stretchy?
It's like a hot dog.
Oh my god.
How is it so stretchy?
That's good.
By the way, this area, Dondemon, it's pretty cool looking.
Like the buildings, architecturally very interesting.
But this one especially, right here.
This like spaceship looking thing, super cool building.
That's the Dondemon Design Plaza.
You can see there are more stalls here.
This one sells things like tteokbokki and kimbap.
And you have like restaurants on this street.
So like I said, guys, this is our last day here.
And we're leaving tomorrow in the morning.
And it's been too short.
It really, really has.
I have to say, we were surprised at how warm it is here in Seoul.
In December, look at me.
I'm only wearing a sweatshirt and a thin t-shirt like below this one.
Unusually warm.
I was prepared for the cold.
It wasn't that bad.
But I hear that it is very unusual in December.
It's supposed to be very cold.
Anyway, I look forward to coming back to Korea.
I really do.
So much, so many more things to see and eat here.
And for us, six days was just not enough.
No, sorry.
And I was going to say something else.
I completely forgot.
What was I going to say?
And so stay tuned for the videos on Tabi Eats coming very soon.
We did eat quite a lot of food here in Korea.
And like I said, we cannot wait to come back again in the very near future.
Thanks so much for watching, guys.
And I'll see you guys next time.
We're going to go home now and get some rest because we do fly out tomorrow.
Talk to you later.
Bye-bye.
