The Bermuda Triangle.
If you've ever wanted to uncover the secrets
behind this notorious area,
you're going to need an unsinkable boat,
some decent scuba gear,
and of course, if certain theories are to be believed,
something to ward off evil spirits.
The ocean is already a scary place,
but this region is one
that even some of the most experienced pilots
and captains always avoid.
It's perhaps the most mysterious
and of course dangerous bodies of water on our planet.
It's claimed thousands upon thousands of souls
while also causing the disappearance
of more than 50 ships and 20 planes to date,
including some that were sent out
to investigate and rescue previously lost vessels.
But whatever's causing these disappearances
remains a mystery,
despite many trying to get to the bottom of it.
If you've ever wanted to know the truth, keep watching.

This is the Dark Chronicles.
The Curse of the Bermuda Triangle.
Situated over a portion of the Atlantic Ocean,
the Bermuda Triangle is estimated to cover
between 1.3 million and 3.9 million square kilometers.
This range is due to the fact
that the exact location of the points
that form the triangle are not universally agreed upon.
Though typically, they're believed to be
in the same three general areas.
The first point, which sits farthest to the north,
is also where this mysterious area gets its name,
the British-controlled territory made up
of 181 mostly connected islands called Bermuda.
To get to the second point,
one would need to travel south
to the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico.
Finally, the third point is situated to the northwest,
on the east coast of Florida in the United States.
Most often, the coastal city of Miami is the point
in which the proposed triangle ends.
Events that defied explanation have been occurring
inside the boundaries of the Bermuda Triangle
since the early 19th century.
Between 1800 and 1840, three sailing ships,
the USS Pickering, the USS Wasp, and the USS Wildcat,
all vanished with all hands, never to be seen again.
And the Rosalie, another ship, was discovered adrift
with nobody left on board and no trace
as to where they'd gone.
The ship just appeared to be abandoned without explanation.
On September 17th, 1950, an article written
by Edward Van Winkle Jones appeared
in various newspapers across the United States,
which suggested that an unusually high number
of disappearances were occurring
within the Bermuda Triangle.
In the years that followed,
many investigators began opening the public's eyes
to the mysterious happenings in that region,
which narrowed down the area to the rough triangular zone
that we recognize today.
The Bermuda Triangle didn't get its other nickname,
the Devil's Triangle, for nothing,
as it's believed to have an incalculably high number
of individuals that have been claimed
by the mysterious forces behind it.
While some may have disappeared by themselves,
others went out in large groups,
with hundreds of lives taken at once
as huge ships and planes went down.
On March 4th, 1918, the USS Cyclops departed
from the island of Barbados, carrying a crew of 306
and a full cargo of manganese ore,
a brittle, silvery metal used
in the creation of stainless steel.
However, the ship was never heard from again,
vanishing without a trace, with all hands unaccounted for.
Just a few years later, on January 31st, 1921,
the Carroll A. Deering, a five-mastered schooner,
was found, having run aground at Diamond Shoals,
just outside of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
Investigators found nobody on board, and once again,
no trace as to where they disappeared to.
One of the most famous aircraft disappearances
to occur inside the Triangle was Flight 19,
a training flight that consisted
of five separate General Motors TBM Avenger torpedo bombers,
which took off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
on December 5th, 1945, and never landed.
14 naval aviators were killed on this flight,
but what makes this event even more alarming is
that the vessel that was dispatched
to investigate what happened to the training flight,
a seaplane called PBM Mariner, was also lost,
this one with 13 crew on board.
Of course, these weren't the only disappearances
to take place in the terrifying waters,
as dozens of planes and ships were either found abandoned
or vanished completely.
All these disappearances have baffled millions
of people for decades, but despite the high number of them,
some still point to naturally occurring events
as the reason for them.
One theory that focuses on the aircrafts
that were lost to the Triangle suggests
that it might just be the pilots of those planes
that failed to account for the agonic line,
which is an invisible line that runs
from the North Pole to the South.
It's where there's no need to compensate
for magnetic compass's variation when navigating.
Basically, it's one of two places on the planet
where a compass needle will point true north
instead of magnetic north.
Another explanation points the metaphorical finger
at rogue waves, which are colossal swells of water
which move unpredictably and can cause incredible damage.
The number of storms that plague the area
in and around the Bermuda Triangle
are considered the things responsible for these waves.
While natural disasters could be behind the disappearances,
the sheer number of them seems far too coincidental
to be true.
Thus, many who have investigated the Bermuda Triangle
have pointed to other more paranormal explanations
for the mysterious events that transpire there.
One of the more popular theories suggests
that somewhere inside the invisible boundaries
that surround the Triangle is some type of doorway
to a parallel world.
In addition, that many of the vessels lost in those waters
have actually somehow passed through that.
Perhaps this doorway is one way
and those vehicles were stranded in that other universe.
Or worse, perhaps whatever exists in that place
saw to it that the souls that were carried there
could never return.
Another mind-blowing theory
suggests that disappearances in the area
are actually caused by a few remaining members
of an ancient civilization
that were taken by the waves themselves,
the mythical lost city or continent of Atlantis.
In the 1970s, author Charles Berlitz claimed
that there was, in fact, a whole continent
upon which Atlantis was built in the Bermuda area,
but the forces at work inside the Triangle
took it in similar ways in which they'd taken ships
and planes.
Supporters of this theory have declared
that certain formations found off the coast of Bimini
that resemble man-made roads and constructs
are evidence that the lost civilization
was stolen away by those forces
because of its unfortunate geographical location.
But there's actually more than one way
in which the vanishings could be the result
of the Atlanteans, the first of which points the finger
at leftover technology from the civilization,
which many believe was far more advanced
than that which we rely on today.
This technology is said to still be somehow functioning
somewhere in the waters within the Triangle's borders
and is responsible for either sinking
or otherwise taking away the unsuspecting crew and passengers.
Yet another theory identifies the incredibly secretive
and possibly semi-aquatic people of Atlantis
as the ones behind the vanishings.
It further says that whenever a plane or boat
strays too close to uncovering their existence,
that they use their mystical abilities
or advanced technology at their fingertips
to intervene, all in the name of staying hidden.
Incredibly, those theories are not the only ones.
Others include UFOs and alien interventions,
time warps, and gargantuan sea creatures.
But perhaps it's not just one theory, but several,
and it's just that this patch of water
just happens to be cursed,
with those who cross it risking their lives
just by going on vacation.
Whether it's an unbelievable number
of natural disasters and accidents,
or an opening and closing gateway to a parallel world,
or even the remnants of the lost civilization of Atlantis
making all of these planes and ships disappear,
the fact is thousands of people
and dozens of vessels have been lost.
It remains one of the most mysterious areas on Earth,
and despite being dismissed as fiction by some,
the reality is the disappearances happened,
and we remain in the dark as to why.
So book your vacations, flights, and cruises alike
with caution, especially if you're planning to travel in,
over, or through the waters within the eerie
and truly mysterious borders of the Bermuda Triangle.
