There are 10 species of the raptor caracara, that can be found from the southern United Sates all the way down to South America. They’re a type of falcon that has sturdy builds, broad wings, and powerful, hooked beaks. The aggressive caracara has keen eyesight to locate carrion, insects, small mammals, and reptiles. They’re often seen walking with their long legs in search of prey. Caracaras are opportunistic feeders since they both hunt and scavenge. They’re territorial yet cooperate together to chase away larger predators. The Crested Caracara is valued as the national bird of Mexico. They can thrive in a variety of environments, from open grasslands to savannas to forests to urban areas.

The clever caracaras form monogamous pairs and build their nests on cliffs or tall trees. They’re symbols of intelligence, resilience, and curiosity.
