A groundbreaking astronomical discovery. Researchers in the U.S. have discovered the largest black hole jets ever recorded. These phenomena could give us clues about what the universe was like billions of years ago. Take a look. Shooting hot plasma, these two jets streaming from a black hole in a distant galaxy are the largest ever spotted. These black hole jets extend for over 23 million light years. That's roughly the length of 140 of our own Milky Way galaxies lined up end to end. Researchers at Caltech say the jets existed a long time in the past, dating back to the first half of the universe's life. Scientists estimate the universe to be about 13 billion years old. The discoverers nicknamed the system Porphyrion, after a giant from Greek mythology. They said it can help us learn more about the early stages of the universe. This discovery is important because the magnetism that allows life to develop here on Earth eventually came from the cosmic web, so from intergalactic space. And we think that black hole jets might have had an important role in bringing the magnetism there. So even to trace back where we all came from, we must understand how black hole jets work. Eileen Meyer, who studies black holes at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was shocked by the magnitude of the discovery. This is literally the largest structure in the universe that isn't itself basically some part of the primordial structure that was set in place back at the time of the Big Bang. Black hole jets are some of the universe's most powerful forces that we know. The discovery opens the door to further explore how they influence the cosmos.
