404 Works by A. G. A. Edelfelt
Albert Edelfelt was a pioneering Finnish painter who brought international recognition to Finnish art in the late 19th century. Born in Porvoo, Finland, into a Swedish-speaking family, Edelfelt was deeply inspired by national identity and history. The influence of the family’s close friend, poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, led him to create emotionally powerful depictions of Finnish historical events and literature, including illustrations for The Tales of Ensign Stål.
Edelfelt studied art in Antwerp, Paris, and Saint Petersburg, absorbing academic and realist styles while refining his skill in portraiture and genre scenes. His years in Paris (1874–1878) were especially formative, placing him at the heart of the European art world, where he gained acclaim at the Paris Salon. He later served as a cultural bridge between Finland and the continent, supporting young Finnish artists and mentoring rising talents like Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
In 1888, Edelfelt married Baroness Ellan de la Chapelle, and they had one child. Though based in Finland, he remained internationally active, earning prestigious commissions, including portraits of Russian royalty.
This curated collection of 313 works highlights Edelfelt’s mastery in combining national romanticism with academic precision, and his role as a cultural ambassador who brought Finnish identity to the world stage.
