Imagine being Margot Robbie and thinking that the person you like would never go for you.
Well, that happened.
But now, she's married to the guy.
Margot and her husband Tom Ackerley met on set in 2013, becoming friends and then eventually
husband and wife.
But it wasn't a completely smooth road to marriage.
You've only been married, what, nine months?
Yeah!
God, has it been nine months?
I think it has.
Wow!
The couple now owns a company together and seems so in love.
But in the beginning, Margot thought her husband would never give her a chance.
Margot met her filmmaker husband on the set of Suite Francaise in 2013.
At the time, she wasn't yet a household name, and he was an assistant director on the film.
Margot was playing the role of a supporting character in the movie.
The two hit it off right away and became really good friends.
And it seems like Margot got friend-zoned because it was actually her who pursued Tom,
and she thought he would never go for her.
She told U.S. Vogue,
"...I was the ultimate single gal.
The idea of relationships made me want to vomit.
And then this crept up on me.
We were friends for so long, I was always in love with him, but I thought, oh, he would
never love me back.
Don't make it weird, Margot.
Don't be silly and tell him that you like him."
Well, she did tell him, and surprise, surprise, they started dating, got married, and are
currently living a happy life together.
The secret to their happiness might be in their privacy.
Much like other Hollywood couples, they've managed to keep their love life out of the
public eye, and it seems to be working for them.
Tom is also in the film industry even though we don't see him in movies, he works behind
the scenes.
He's been an assistant director and producer for a long time, and has worked on some really
big films, including The Brothers Grimsby and Macbeth.
He's even been on the crew for Tinker Tailor Soldier, Spy, and War Horse.
And while they're all smiles today, working in the film industry can take a toll on relationships.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in Australia, Margot spoke about the beginning
of their relationship and what it took to make it work.
"...and my husband knows not to mess around."
She said,
"...the most helpful thing I've learned from other couples in this industry is that you
don't go more than three weeks without seeing each other."
She went on to add that long-distance relationships can be hard when you don't see the light at
the end of the tunnel, so the three-week rule is key.
"...we don't have time for chill, but we have a lot of fun and we love what we do."
So for any of you watching this video who's in a long-distance relationship, take notes.
The two officially started dating in 2014, but before that, they were roommates.
"...he's amazing.
I mean, he's so, he's so prepared, he's so fun."
Margot told Us Weekly at the premiere of Goodbye Christopher Robin,
"...my husband and I were roommates before we were even dating, so I'm kind of living
with my roommate and it's awesome."
Imagine being roommates with Margot Robbie!
She added that they used to live with a bunch of people.
"...that's so fun.
And what's…
Roommates are tough for me.
I always…"
"...as long as you've got good roommates though, it's good."
So now that they live together, it feels really grown up.
And while they quietly started dating in 2014, they weren't even photographed together until
2015 at a New York Rangers game.
We wonder how they kept things under wraps that whole time.
The first step to keeping a relationship quiet is to rarely talk about it.
They didn't even walk a red carpet together until 2017, a whole year after they got married.
And while we rarely hear the A-list actress talk about her marriage, when she does, it
is so cute and oftentimes hilarious.
In 2018, she told Porter,
"...being married is actually the most fun ever.
Life got way more fun somehow.
I have a responsibility being someone's wife.
I want to be better."
But the funniest was when she told The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Tom ended up in a weird
situation that involved both Barack Obama and Ellen DeGeneres?
"...we should be on a beach right now, we should be on a honeymoon, what are we doing?"
The two took their delayed honeymoon in Tahiti at an ultra-private and secluded resort.
On a rainy first day, they decided to check out the gym on the resort, but Tom didn't
pack gym clothes, so he just made what he had work.
Margot said that Tom put on the shortest gym shorts because that's all he had, with nothing
underneath and jumped on the bike.
Margot told him that she could see everything, and he insisted that no one would see them
because the resort was super private.
When they walked into the gym, they saw Ellen DeGeneres, her wife Portia, and President
Barack Obama.
What a hilarious story!
It really seems like these two know how to have fun and laugh at life.
So what was their wedding like?
"...when that wedding happens, the whole city is gonna celebrate."
Surprise!
It was a secret.
The two got married on Australia's Gold Coast.
Margot was spotted around the time of the wedding wearing a t-shirt that said,
"'Say I Do' Down Under."
According to Australian media, the two got married near Margot's hometown, and her mom
walked her down the aisle while her sister was her maid of honor.
Next, the couple lived in Shepherd's Bush, London, although they now live in L.A.
A source told Women's Daily,
"...Tom initially wanted to get married in the UK, but he knows how much it means to
Margot to tie the knot on home soil and how special it is for her, so he didn't put up
much of a fight.
They even got married around Christmas so that they would be able to spend time with
both their families afterwards."
Any perfect couple knows that a relationship is made up of give and take, and supporting
each other is number one.
Margot said in an interview with Mirror that Tom is that support system when it comes to
her anxiety.
She said that she's overtaken with anxiety before she has to start a new role.
Talking about her latest film, The Suicide Squad sequel, she said,
"...even though Harley Quinn is a character I have played before, I still got scared before
shooting because I'm always nervous to start any job."
Her husband knows this, though, and encourages her, reminding her of her immense talents.
She said,
"...I have this complete crisis of faith and think, oh my gosh, I'm not even good at acting
and I can't do this."
And every single time, Tom calms her nerves and reassures her that she can do it and she'll
be fine.
"...I often worry that I'm not giving one side of my job all that I can."
Knowing this about the couple, it's absolutely no surprise that they started a business together.
"...well, it's not just my husband and I in the company, there's a couple of us, and yeah,
we've got about 13 films in development right now."
They started Lucky Chap Entertainment, which has produced I, Tonya and Hulu's Dollface.
In an interview with Mirror, Margot said,
"...we started our production company, Lucky Chap Entertainment, with our best friends,
and it continues to be a wonderful group dynamic.
We all really work well together.
I feel very lucky."
"...maybe 10 projects in the TV department right now, so yeah, the company's, like, really
growing quickly."
The lovebirds have worked together on I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, and the upcoming live-action
Barbie, and it's clear that they love working together.
But it's not all work and no play for this Hollywood couple.
The two do love a vacation here and there, and when they take it, they just can't seem
to keep their hands off of each other.
Margot and Tom were spotted vacationing in Mexico, and the two were all smiles while
hanging out in the pool and cabana.
When they vacation, they love a beach, because before they were married, they were spotted
partaking in some major PDA in Hawaii.
So while they're all tight-lipped about their relationship, they're not afraid to show how
much they love each other in public.
Now that's what we'd call balance.
So what's next for these two?
Margot recently finished up work on The Suicide Squad, which hits theaters in August, and
is set to release Barbie, a live-action film about a doll living in Barbieland.
Margot Robbie is even joining Scarlett Johansson in Wes Anderson's latest film, which is currently
shooting in Spain, and plans to wrap sometime in September.
The details of this film are strictly under wraps, so we can't wait to see what comes
from it.
Margot and Tom are also producing the Netflix show Maids, and are behind the Hulu limited
series about the life of Mike Tyson.
When it comes to starting a family, Margot told Australia's Sunday Style that she wants
tons of children.
She said she grew up in a family of four, so four feels like a good number for her.
And if you haven't had enough of this couple, Tom is constantly sharing posts that celebrate
his wife on social media.
