Hi, salut tout le monde.
So someone during our live stream, we do every Friday, asked us if we could make a video
about French words and terms about football because the World Cup is starting soon.
I thought it was really interesting.
I'm not the biggest fan or the biggest expert but here are a bunch of words, a general list
of words that can help you understand maybe if you watch a game here in France.
Hi guys.
We have some e-books and e-courses you can learn French with but first, make sure you
try our free e-course at streetfrench.org.
Let's start with a general category.
So you have un match de foot, then the ball, the football is un ballon de foot, un ballon
de football but we really rarely say football, we usually always say foot.
Then World Cup is la coupe du monde.
What the players are wearing is called un maillot, un maillot de foot.
So we speak really fast.
Of course, if you read it yourself, it would be un maillot de foot but we speak super fast.
It's un maillot de foot.
There's a price that is called le ballon d'or, le ballon d'or.
Then l'équipe de France, l'équipe is the team, l'équipe de France, l'équipe de France
and the Parisian team is called Paris Saint-Germain, Paris Saint-Germain and people usually say
PSG, PSG and you can hear that a lot in like rap songs and PSG sur le maillot.
Let's talk about another category.
So you have le terrain, le terrain de foot, that's where the players are playing, right?
Le terrain, le but, le but is the court, le but, le stade, le stade, stadium, le stade.
Then le banc de touche, le banc de touche, that's where the players wait to get on the
field and start playing.
When they exchange players, they're waiting on the bench and it's called le banc de touche
and then les vestiaires, that's where the players are before playing and at the end
when they change and everything, le vestiaire, le vestiaire.
Let's talk about different people.
You have les joueurs, les joueurs, the players, les joueurs.
The coach is l'entraîneur, l'entraîneur.
Then you have l'arbitre, l'arbitre.
So the R is kind of subtle, l'arbitre.
Then you have le gardien de but, le gardien de but.
Again, like very fast, le gardien de but.
It's like almost one word, le gardien de but.
So one of the most famous or important person in football culture, I guess, and the funniest
would be the person who comments on TV.
I don't know how you say that in English but in French, it's le commentateur sportif, le
commentateur sportif and there was one in France that is really famous who stopped doing
it because he retired.
So yeah, here they're like legends.
It's pretty funny.
Le commentateur sportif and then of course, you have les supporters.
So it's interesting.
We use the English word.
We don't have a French word for that.
So we just say it with a French accent, les supporters.
Let's dive into different terms about the rules of football.
So you have tirer, tirer is to kick, to kick the ball but sometimes they say un coup de
pied but un coup de pied also means to kick someone.
So it's like usually we say tirer, I guess, tirer and then une passe, une passe, une passe.
So the next one is funny.
We say une tête is when they score a goal with their head, une tête.
So the next one is marquer un but.
Un but, so le but is the goal, the cage, right?
Un but is a goal.
I guess it's the same thing in English.
So le but est un but and the expression is marquer un but, marquer un but.
Then we use some English terms like penalty or corner, corner.
We say with a French accent again, pénalty et corner.
Then you have une faute, une faute.
When un joueur makes une faute, he gets either un carton jaune or un carton rouge, carton
jaune, carton rouge.
Next term is hors-jeu, hors-jeu, hors-jeu.
Halfway through the game, you have la mi-temps, la mi-temps, mi-temps.
At the end, they can stretch the game a little bit longer.
It's called les prolongations, les prolongations, les prolongations and at the end, the results
can be either matche nul, matche nul.
When no one wins, it's even, matche nul, matche nul.
If your team won, you can say ils ont gagné 2-0, ils ont gagné 2-0 ou ils ont perdu 2-0.
So I might not have said all the words but if I've forgotten something, you can write
it down in the comments below but yeah, I said all the most well-known and general terms
that can really help you follow along and watch a game in French with the French commentateur
sportif and yeah.
And so yeah, enjoy the World Cup coming soon and see you next time for a new video.
