Chen Li's "A War Symphony" ( 戰爭交響曲) is a visual poem as well as a sound poem.

The Chinese character 兵 (pronounced as "bing") means "soldier." 乒 and 乓 (pronounced as "ping" and "pong"), which look like one-legged soldiers, are two onomatopoeic words imitating sounds of collision or gunshots. The character 丘 (pronounced as "chiou") means "hill."

Chen Li (1954- ), regarded as "one of the most innovative and exciting poets writing in Chinese today," is one of the best representatives of contemporary Chinese poetry in Taiwan. A prolific poet, prose writer and translator, he subtly combines in his poetry the elements of Western modernism and postmodernism with the merits of Oriental poetics and the Chinese language.

陳黎的〈戰爭交響曲〉共分三節，每節十六行，但全詩只由四個形狀相似的字組成：兵，乒，乓，丘。第一節詩由每行二十四個「兵」字排列成詩作中難得一見的壯盛軍容，讀者腦中立即閃現十萬大軍踩著整齊步伐浩浩蕩蕩開往前線的情景。第二節乍看之下仍由「兵」字組成，然仔細讀之會發現每隔若干個「兵」夾雜著「乒」或「乓」，出現的頻率由低轉高，由第一行的三個字到第六行以後的二十四個，第十一行以後又轉低——夾雜在暗示休止符、死亡的空白之間。中國文字之絕妙在此發揮得淋漓盡至。「兵」是四肢健全的戰士，「乒」「乓」則是被砲火炸斷手腳的傷兵了。詩人未用任何文字敘述，透過視覺效果，成功地呈現出戰爭的殘酷。

他同時利用詩行的排列，不費一詞一句，就點描出軍隊由並肩作戰到潰不成軍的戰爭慘狀。在最後一節，似乎所有的戰士再度集合。讀者在此可以有很大的想像空間。你可以從視覺的角度想像：軍士返鄉，個個缺臂斷腿，沒有終戰的喜悅，只有生命的酸楚；你也可以從文字的意義去想：丘也，小土山，三百八十四個土丘，三百八十四座墳塚，「一將功成萬骨枯」的最佳寫照。山丘雖無言，卻對戰爭做了最強烈的控訴。

這是一首頗重視覺效果的詩作，但聽覺效果卻也同樣出色，尤其是第二詩節由兵、乒、乓三個字交響出的音效，讀來真讓人覺得槍聲砲聲不絕於耳，你彷彿還聽到此起彼落的士兵倒地聲，甚至空白處也有聲音——死亡驟臨的聲音，寂靜的聲音。〈戰爭交響曲〉結合了影像、聲音、文字的特質，成功地開拓了詩的可能。它傾瀉出對戰爭的批判與悲憫，也歌頌了中國文字的巧妙。
