Best Time to Visit Nice
The best time to visit Nice is from late spring to early autumn, May to September.
During these months, the weather is warm and perfect for beach activities,
with temperatures ranging from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit,
or 21 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius.
This period also coincides with various events and festivals,
such as the Nice Jazz Festival in July and the Carnival of Nice in February,
making it an exciting time to explore the city.
City Airport Tips
Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is the main gateway to the city.
It's well-connected to the city center by various transportation options.
The most convenient way to reach the city is by taking the Tram Line 2,
which costs around $2 USD and takes about 25 minutes.
Alternatively, you can take the Airport Express Bus, Bus 98, for about $7 USD.
Taxis are also available and will cost around $40 to $50 USD to get to the city center.
Where to Stay in Nice
For the quintessential Nice experience, the Promenade des Anglais area is your best bet.
Here, you can find luxurious hotels like the Negresco Hotel,
with prices ranging from $250 to $400 USD per night.
For budget-conscious travelers, the Old Town, Voynice,
offers charming boutique hotels and hostels with prices ranging from $50 to $150 USD per night.
Staying in these areas ensures you're close to major attractions, restaurants, and the beach.
How to Get Around Nice
Nice has an efficient public transportation system that includes trams and buses.
A single ticket costs around $2 USD,
while a day pass is available for $7 USD, offering unlimited travel.
Renting a bicycle or electric scooter is also a popular option,
with rental costs around $15 USD per day.
For a more scenic experience, consider walking along the beautiful Promenade des Anglais
or through the charming streets of Old Town.
Morning
Climb up to Castle Hill
Start your one day in Nice by soaking up the breathtaking views of Castle Hill,
also known as Colline des Châteaux.
This 92-meter high hill overlooks the stunning Bay of Nice.
Don't be misled by the name, there's no castle up there,
but you'll find the best viewpoint in Nice at the top.
If you're driving, which I generally wouldn't recommend in Nice due to the limited parking
and traffic, you can go up the hill and park at the top, saving yourself most of the climb.
Otherwise, start your ascent from Promenade des Anglais
via the staircase or take the convenient lift located at the foot of the stairs.
At the top, you'll discover an enchanting artificial waterfall,
the intriguing ruins of a cathedral, and several viewpoints.
The best view is above the waterfall, offering a panoramic vista over the Old Town
and the coastline that's simply awe-inspiring.
Although you can visit Castle Hill any time of day,
I recommend going first thing in the morning to avoid crowds and the scorching heat.
If you're planning to take the stairs, it's even more crucial to go early.
Breakfast
For a fantastic breakfast near Castle Hill, head to Le Café de Turin just a short stroll away.
This iconic café, known for its fresh seafood and lively atmosphere,
is perfect for starting your day.
Order a delicious French breakfast with a buttery croissant,
a freshly squeezed orange juice, and a rich café au lait, all for around $15 USD.
Insider Tip
Sit outside on the terrace to enjoy the morning buzz of the city
and watch the locals as they start their day.
The friendly staff and charming location make it an
spot to fuel up before your Castle Hill adventure.
Mid-Morning
Get Lost in the Old Town
After your breakfast, continue your sightseeing in the Old Town of Nice,
which is just a short walk from Castle Hill.
The first thing you'll encounter on your way is the Coeur de Soleil Market,
the most famous street market in Nice.
Open daily from 9am to 1pm, except Mondays,
it's a vibrant spot full of fresh produce, flowers, and local specialties.
After exploring the market,
the best thing to do is to get lost in the narrow, cobblestone streets of the Old Town.
It feels like a charming maze with colorful houses, cute little shops,
talented local artists, and amazing cafés and restaurants around every corner.
Insider Tip
Keep an eye out for the small art galleries and local craft shops hidden in the alleyways.
They offer unique souvenirs and a true taste of Niçois culture.
Visit Place Garibaldi
Place Garibaldi, Garibaldi Square, is one of the most stunning squares in Nice.
Located at the northern end of the Old Town, it's just a 10-minute walk from the Coeur de Soleil Market.
The yellow facades of the buildings surrounding the square are absolutely gorgeous,
and in the center, you'll find a fountain with a monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Insider Tip
Grab a coffee or a gelato from one of the nearby cafés and take a moment to relax by the fountain,
soaking in the beautiful architecture and lively atmosphere.
Lunch
For a delightful lunch near Place Garibaldi, head to Café de Turin.
Renowned for its fresh seafood and vibrant atmosphere, just a stone's throw away from the
square, this iconic restaurant is perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal.
Order the seafood platter, which includes oysters, shrimp, and mussels for around $30 USD.
Pair it with a crisp glass of local white wine for an additional $10 USD.
Afternoon
Place Massena
Next on your one-day Nice itinerary is Place Massena.
It's about a 12-minute walk from Place Garibaldi,
but if you're feeling tired, you can hop on the L1 tram line.
Place Massena is the largest and most iconic square in Nice,
the stunning Pompeian red-colored buildings with their elegant arches
and the striking black and white tiles on the ground will surely take your breath away.
It's the perfect spot for people watching,
shopping, or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the cafes and restaurants nestled under the archways.
White Blue Stripped Parasols at Rue de Plage
If you've seen photos of Nice, you're probably familiar with the iconic blue and white striped
parasols on the beach. To experience them in person, head over to Rue de Plage.
Nice boasts numerous private and public beaches along its beautiful shore.
While public beaches are free to access,
you need to pay for a sun lounger at private beaches to enjoy their facilities.
Since you only have one day to stay in Nice, it might not be worth paying the
full day price for a sun lounger if you plan to explore other attractions.
For example, at Rue de Plage, a sun lounger with an umbrella costs around $33 USD,
which is reasonable if you're spending the entire day but not ideal if you're just there for a few
hours. So, if you want a quick dip in the sea, opt for one of the public beaches.
Walk Along the Promenade des Anglais
The Promenade des Anglais is one of the most iconic spots in Nice, and you simply can't
miss it. This 7-kilometer-long promenade stretches from the airport all the way to
Castle Hill. It's a favorite spot among both locals and tourists, so you'll find it bustling
with people, especially on the weekends. The Promenade des Anglais offers stunning
views of the azure blue sea, and strolling along the palm-treed line path is definitely
one of the best things to do in Nice. You'll come across many luxurious hotels,
fancy restaurants, and charming cafes along the way. To follow this one-day itinerary,
I recommend starting at Rue de Plage and walking along the promenade until you reach Boulevard
Gambetta on your right. Then, continue on that road to reach your next destination,
the St. Nicholas Cathedral. Insider Tip
Stop by one of the cafes along the promenade for a refreshing drink and a quick snack to
keep your energy up as you explore the beautiful sights of Nice.
Early Evening – St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral
St. Nicholas Cathedral is often regarded as one of the most significant Orthodox buildings
outside of Russia. As soon as you arrive, you feel like you've stepped into Moscow or
St. Petersburg instead of Nice. Located in the suburbs, it's a bit of a trek, about a 25-30
walk from Rue de Plage, but trust me, it's totally worth it. If you prefer to save time,
you can always take a taxi or an Uber. The church is open every day from 10am to 6pm,
and you can even go inside to explore. Just remember, since it's a religious site,
you need to cover up your knees and shoulders to enter. While taking pictures inside is not
allowed, be sure to capture some stunning shots of the exterior.
Evening – Head back to Old Town for Dinner and Nightlife
To wrap up your one day in Nice, I recommend heading back to the Old Town for dinner
and to experience the vibrant nightlife. The city has a completely different vibe at night,
and even if you're not into partying, it's totally worth taking another stroll through
the charming streets. For dinner, try Le Bistro du Port, where you can enjoy a delicious meal
for around $40 per person. Afterward, check out Wayne's Bar, one of the most famous spots in Old
Town, known for its lively atmosphere and live music almost every night. If you're up for more
adventure, consider joining a fun bar crawl. Whatever you choose, take some time to sit back
and relax. You deserve it after the busy day you've had. Insider Tip – Grab a seat outside
at Wayne's Bar to enjoy the music and soak in the lively ambience of the Old Town at night.
