Of Henri Duparc 1848-1933, the student of César Franck almost only the 14 highly regarded song compositions are known. ‘Je veux être ému’ (I want to be moved/touched) Duparc said with every work, and what did not correspond to that, he destroyed. These songs are characterised, each in its own way, by the avoidance of contrived effects, and instead, the highly conscious painting of moods with unexpected modulations and a most delicate piano accompaniment. Henri Duparc had to give up composing as early as 1885 (37 years old) due to a nervous illness.
