Humpback Whale Wonder!

When bad weather leads to a magical experience in the Kingdom of Tonga.

We were fortunate to witness humpback whales (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦) breeding in their South Pacific playground. Each winter in the Southern Hemisphere they migrate from the cold Antarctic waters to Tonga’s warm sheltered waters. Male whales are known for their complex songs which play an important role in the mating process.

The humpback whale population near Tonga is part of the larger South Pacific group. After being severely depleted by whaling in the 20th century, these populations are now recovering, though they are still considered vulnerable.
