A motorcyclist is dead following a crash in Springfield Saturday morning.
22 News reporter Victoria Buddy shares how bikers in the community
are reminding drivers to drive sober and be cautious.
People aren't paying attention. When you're on a bike they don't necessarily see you.
Thinking of coming back home to my family.
Longtime bikers reminding drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
Just this year in Hampton County there's been at least six deadly motorcycle crashes.
That's according to the Hampton District Attorney's Office.
Look out for them. Always look out for them. You're looking out for yourself as well.
You give them more attention because they're more vulnerable in terms of cover-up.
Most recently Springfield Police arresting 39-year-old Precious Garrett Saturday
around 2.45 in the morning following a deadly motorcycle crash on Page Boulevard and Rocha
Street. She's been charged with motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence of
alcohol. The motorcyclist died due to his injuries. A memorial is now set up in the
victim's honor. A family member visiting the site says he was a beloved father of seven
and on his way back from work that morning. Longtime bikers with advice to those on the road
as another was taken too soon.
Look twice, save a life is the best advice I could give. Complete stops. I know a lot of us
sometimes don't make that complete stop at the stop sign.
Make eye contact with drivers. A lot of people you can really see when they're on their cell phone,
when they're driving, when you're on a bike and you just got to try to give them as much
room as possible. A reminder from Springfield Police if you're having a night out, plan ahead,
designate a sober driver before heading out the door, know your legal limit and
use ride share services like Uber or Lyft. Working for you, Victoria Budde, 22 News.
