A mysterious animal spotted at a campsite in Montana has caught a lot of attention on Reddit.
User Gerda Haria shared three photos of a black, furry creature with a face that looks like a
bear's and a long, fluffy tail. The animal was seen near the campsite's cooking area
and even looked directly at the camera in one photo. The hiker, who was camping with his wife
at Cracker Lake in Glacier National Park, said his wife spotted the animal about 10 feet away
while they were cooking. The creature briefly stood on its hind legs before running off as he
tried to take a picture. Wildlife expert Regina Domingo identified the animal as a wolverine,
which has been listed as endangered since 2023. Although wolverines may look like small bears,
they are actually part of the weasel family. They are known for being tough and sometimes
fight wolves over food, but they usually don't bother people. Encounters with wolverines in
the wild are very rare. According to Conservation Northwest, there are fewer than 300 wolverines
left in the lower 48 states. They prefer cold climates and are mostly found in Washington,
Alaska, Montana, and Oregon, as well as in Canada and Russia.
