Michael Johns from Season 7
Michael Johns was an unforgettable contestant on Season 7 of American Idol in 2008.
He finished in 8th place, but left a lasting impression on fans and judges alike.
His renditions of songs like Light My Fire and Dream On showcased his powerful voice and unique style.
Even the tough Simon Cowell praised him, calling him a white soul singer.
Did you know Johns was born in Australia where he developed a love for music early on?
His family was musically inclined with his brother, sister, and stepfather all being singers and musicians.
This musical environment helped shape his raw talent.
Before his American Idol fame, Johns moved to Atlanta to chase his music dreams and later settled in Los Angeles.
In 2002, he signed with Maverick Records and started making a name for himself.
After his time on Idol, Michael released his first full-length album Hold Back My Heart in 2009.
Fans loved it, and he followed up with a three-song EP titled Love and Sex in 2012.
His soulful and bluesy sound resonated with many, and he continued to perform and record music.
But Johns kept a relatively low profile in the following years until tragedy struck.
In 2014, he developed a blood clot in his leg.
Just two days later, on August 1, 2014, he passed away at the young age of 35.
The initial report said he died from a blood clot, but the coroner's report later revealed he suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy.
This condition causes the heart to become enlarged and weakened, leading to heart failure.
Michael's passing was a shock to everyone, including his fans and the music community.
Simon Cowell tweeted,
A truly great guy. Rest in peace, Michael.
His wife Stacey, whom he married in 2007, survived him.
Despite his short life, Johns left behind a legacy of music and memories that continue to touch the hearts of many.
Ricky Smith from Season 2
The warm and friendly former schoolteacher, Ricky Smith, captured our hearts during Season 2 of American Idol in 2003.
His audition song, Brian McKnight's One Last Cry, showcased his incredible talent, earning him eighth place in the competition.
During his time on the show, he sang memorable songs like 1, 2, 3 by Len Berry, It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop,
I've Done Enough Dying Today by Larry Gatlin, Let's Groove by Earth, Wind and Fire, and Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.
Despite not winning, he became close to that year's winner, Ruben stuttered.
His performances on the show were so impressive that his home state of Oklahoma honored him.
After American Idol, Ricky moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career.
However, despite his efforts, he struggled to gain the recognition he deserved.
Eventually, he moved back to his hometown, Oklahoma City.
There, life took a different turn for him.
Instead of performing in big stadiums, Ricky found himself singing Happy Birthday to customers at Coach's Bricktown, a local sports bar.
In a 2008 interview with USA Today, Ricky expressed his frustration saying,
I wasn't ready to accept the fact that I had to come back and give up music. I've made peace with it, but it's still frustrating.
This statement shows how hard it was for him to let go of his dreams.
Sadly, on May 5, 2016, Ricky's life was tragically cut short.
While driving on a highway outside of Oklahoma City, a drunk driver going the wrong way crashed into his car head-on.
Ricky was only 36 years old. His death was felt deeply by his family, friends, and fans.
Ricky's personality and talent left a lasting impression on everyone who watched him on American Idol.
Known for his sweet demeanor and infectious laugh, he was famous for quoting,
Hercules, Hercules, from The Nutty Professor while clapping his hands.

Leah LaBelle, from Season 3.
If you're a fan of American Idol, you might remember the girl who sang Whitney Houston's I Believe in You and Me in Season 3.
She definitely left everyone in awe.
Well, that was Leah LaBelle, who was just 16 when she auditioned for Season 3 of American Idol.
Randy Jackson was especially impressed by her soulful voice.
Speaking of which, Leah's American Idol journey was quite memorable.
She auditioned as a high school senior with I Believe in You and Me and made it to the top 32,
and was then selected for The Wild Card Show.
Paula Abdul used her wild card vote to save Leah, advancing her to the top 12.
Leah placed 12th singing songs like I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston, Let's Stay Together by Al Green, and You Keep Me Hangin' On by The Supremes.
Despite her talent, Leah finished in 12th place.
That season, Fantasia Barrino won the competition.
Before Idol, Leah had a rich background in music and performance.
Raised in Toronto, she sang in choirs, participated in beauty pageants, and performed in musicals.
Her talent and charisma were evident from a young age.
After American Idol, Leah continued to chase her dreams.
She attended college and then signed a record deal in 2011 with L.A. Reid's Epic Records.
This deal also involved Pharrell Williams and Jermaine Dupri, showing the level of talent she possessed.
Despite this, her record sales were not as high as initially anticipated.
Although her career seemed to be on the rise, her life was cut short in January 2018,
when Leah and her boyfriend, Razual Butler, a former professional basketball player, died in a car crash in Studio City, California.
A months-long investigation revealed that Razual, who was driving, had multiple substances in his system.
Toxicology reports showed he had marijuana, methamphetamine, and oxycodone in his body.
An empty box of Don Julio tequila was also found at the crash scene.
It was a heartbreaking end to two promising lives.
Leah's death on January 31, 2018, at age 31, was a massive loss to the music world.
The involvement of drugs and alcohol in the accident added to the tragedy.
However, an outpouring of love and support followed their deaths.
Fantasia Barrino, the Idol winner from Leah's season, expressed her grief on Twitter, saying,
Her life may have ended too soon, but her legacy lives on in the hearts of her fans and the Idol family.
Leah will always be remembered for her incredible voice and her beautiful spirit.

Lynch was already known to many when he auditioned for the third season of American Idol.

and received yes votes from judges Randy, Paula, and Simon.
This performance earned him a golden ticket to Hollywood,
where he continued to impress with his emotional rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler.
Unfortunately, Lynch was eliminated before the final 12 contestants were chosen.
Lynch's life took a tragic turn after his time on American Idol.

Alexis Cohen made a memorable mark on American Idol in 2008,
not for her singing, but for what happened after her audition.
Known as Glitter Girl by fans, Alexis truly marched to the beat of her own drum.
Her unique style and fiery personality stood out, even if her singing didn't.
Hailing from Pennsylvania, she sang Jefferson Airplane's Somebody to Love during Season 7.
But the judges were not impressed.
Simon Cowell bluntly told her that the competition was not for her.
So what happened next?
Well, Alexis didn't take this well.
She stormed out, calling Simon a big fat bad word and flipping off the camera.
That was the moment when she got famous for comparing him to a villain and swearing at him.
This made a lasting impression on viewers.
Now, unlike any other person who normally wouldn't have the courage to come on the show again,
she returned in Season 8.
This time, she sang Madonna's Like a Prayer.
But to her surprise, her second audition didn't win over the judges either.
Sadly, Simon still found her performance terrible, calling it horrendous.
Despite her repeated attempts, Alexis never got the chance to go to Hollywood.
Tragically, Alexis' life came to a sudden end in the same year.
While in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, she was hit by a car.
The autopsy revealed she had severe injuries to her chest, head, and abdomen.
Alexis was only 25 years old when she died.
The driver, Daniel Bark, was arrested in connection with her death.
He stated that he had been drinking and was driving under the influence.
However, his confession was controversial.
His lawyer argued that Daniel had been pressured into confessing.
Due to this, his confession was not accepted in court.
Additionally, he wasn't read his rights during the arrest, which led to a plea deal.
Daniel was charged with drunk driving and sentenced to only 364 days in jail.
Despite all this, no one has been officially charged for causing Alexis' death.
This lack of justice has left many feeling that her case is unresolved.

leaving her with no chance to move forward in the competition.
The judges were particularly harsh. Paula Abdul admitted she was speechless and felt Goodspeed's performance wasn't great.
Randy Jackson said she was terrible, and Simon Cowell mocked her braces.
Although Goodspeed didn't succeed on the show, her obsession with Paula Abdul continued.
