The Chinese guqin (古琴) is a plucked seven-string instrument from the zither family, with a history dating back to ancient times. Favored by scholars and literati for its subtlety and refinement, it is famously associated with the quote, "a gentleman does not part with his qin or se without good reason." The guqin is linked to the ancient philosopher Confucius and is sometimes called "the father of Chinese music" or "the instrument of the sages." It should not be confused with the guzheng, another long zither that features movable bridges under each string.
