In ancient Chinese mythology, there is a legendary realm known as the Ghost Domain, where a mountain stands adorned with a colossal peach tree spanning three thousand miles, crowned by a golden rooster atop its branches. At the break of dawn, when the golden rooster crows, the wandering souls of the night are compelled to return to the Ghost Domain.
Situated northeast of the peach tree lies the gateway to the Ghost Domain, guarded by two divine beings named Shentu and Yulei. If any misdeeds are committed by the spirits during the night, Shentu and Yulei promptly capture and bind them with reed ropes, delivering them to the tiger for punishment. Consequently, all ghosts in the realm fear Shentu and Yulei. Therefore, people began carving their likeness out of peach wood and placing them at their doorsteps to ward off evil and malevolence. Later on, people inscribed the names of Shentu and Yulei on peach wood boards, believing this would similarly dispel evil spirits. These peach wood boards came to be known as ""Peach Talismans.""
During the Song Dynasty, people began writing couplets on peach wood boards. This served a dual purpose: not only did it maintain the symbolic significance of peach wood in dispelling evil, but it also allowed people to express their aspirations and beautify their doorways. Additionally, couplets written on red paper symbolizing joy and auspiciousness were affixed to doorways during the Lunar New Year to convey people's hopes for good fortune in the coming year. In some regions, people retained the tradition of pasting door gods to pray for the well-being of their families. It is said that by affixing these two door gods, all manner of demons and ghosts would cower in fear. In folklore, the door gods symbolize righteousness and martial prowess. Ancient people believed that individuals with remarkable appearances often possessed extraordinary qualities and abilities. "
