THE STORY OF AMOS: WHO WAS AMOS IN THE BIBLE?

Amos was a shepherd and a sycamore fig farmer from the town of Tekoa, located south of Jerusalem. He lived in the eighth century before Christ and was called by God to prophesy during the reign of Jeroboam the Second in Israel and Uzziah in Judah.

Amos was raised by God to denounce social injustice, corruption, and idolatry that prevailed in Israel. He was not a professional prophet nor did he have formal religious training, but he was chosen directly by God to deliver His message to the people. Amos condemned the oppression of the poor and religious hypocrisy, warning of divine judgment that would come if the people did not repent.

The Book of Amos is a collection of sermons and prophetic visions, often using powerful imagery from nature and rural life. It begins with a series of oracles against Israel’s neighboring nations but quickly turns against Israel, highlighting its transgressions and the need for justice and righteousness.
