Apple is expected to unveil a new line of iPhone 16 phones and major changes to the Apple Watch and AirPods earbuds. It's a big moment for the wearables business. Ed Ludlow is in Cupertino this morning at Apple Park with a preview on "Bloomberg Surveillance."
And this is an odd one. And we'd love some color from you. This feels like unveiling something that doesn't exist yet and might
not exist for a number of months maybe even quarters. Can you walk us through how odd this product unveiling actually is. Yeah
that's it. That's an accurate framing. I mean the most bullish on the street see a super cycle right where they believe
tangibly the consumer is ready for artificial intelligence on device. But the plan is as follows. We'll probably get four
variants of the iPhone 16 generation unveiled today and they'll start shipping at the end of this month. But as is now well
documented the supporting software through IOS 18.1 in other words the update that gives you access to Apple's artificial
intelligence tool is staggered delayed into October. And so there's actually a really interesting element of sort of
misunderstanding. For example the bulls on the street who see the super cycle are very excited about hand set upgrades in
China driven by enthusiasm for AI. As you discussed with your guests earlier Apple is not making Apple intelligence available in
China in the first instance pending regulatory approval. And it is sort of this curious thing. How do you unveil software. It doesn't
have the same sort of sexiness as something that folds or something that's got new corners or whatever. Usually the hardware that
they unleash is how are they going to make a software update that you can't get until next year. Sexy. Yeah I think the story for
everyone around the world is if I'm an everyday consumer how do I actually use this technology. You know the beta version of IOS
18.1 has given us a clue. It's tech summer summarization. Some of the reporting from Bloomberg is that it's the image or image
generation functionality that's delayed. A lot of that plays itself out on social media. Right. It's pretty easy now to create a
meme. I had dinner with it with it. Let's call them a tech CEO last night. What I found so interesting is again Apple intelligence
isn't going to be released in the first instance in Europe out of concern for some of the regulatory pressure there. But actually in
Europe the consumer isn't as interested as they are. It's easy for me to sit here in Silicon Valley. Literally I have every
generative AI tool under the sun installed on my phone. But that's culturally in line with what goes on here. There's there's a
simple story that needs to be told in markets around the world. This is how you use AI on your device daily and this is how it
will impact either your work or your personal life.
