Auction Day - Buying Vintage Art
Sep 10, 2024
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and I believe I found some vintage beauties at the auction!
Send Paper and Moose some mail!

Welcome back to Paper and Moose. It is another day, which means another day to hopefully find
some treasure. Today is auction day, so we are off to the auction to rummage through
some box lots and see what we can find. So let's get there. Let's start looking.
Disney. This is old though. There is actually an online auction that has one of these.
What year is this? 1989? I'm pretty sure it was that date.
This is rain for the tree. A whole bunch of vintage rain. What else is in here?
We were dancing on a volcano. Bud lines and fault lines.
These are nice graphics. Natural history.
Carrier pigeons. These are about Christmas reindeer. Kind of like a moose. Not really.
Then there's this stuff.
There's this old carriage. It's really cute. Oh, look at that.
That means a lot of work though.
There's the inside. See the seat?
Too bad. I like this boat.
There's no way I can. I don't have a use for this. Sure is cute though.
$25 on the file cabinet. $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, $10, give
five, five, five, five, five, five, three dollars, three dollars, three dollars on the file cabinet,
$3, $3, $3, $3, so much is fast. So what did we buy today? As you can see from that video,
A lot of the stuff there was stuff that I have no interest in buying at all.
You know, if you're having a party, then all the decorations there, the tablecloths, the
things you hang on the wall, the plates, I think they're perfect, but for me, no.
I don't want to be in the business of reselling plates and Halloween costumes, unless they're
vintage.
But people were buying them because you figure you buy a box for $3 or $4 and people will
buy a stack of plates for $1 because it's cheaper than going to Party City, maybe even
Walmart for holiday plates.
So people were, they were still buying.
What did we buy today?
I did purchase the one box of books and in that box we have some nice books such as this
one, Chatterbox Stories of Natural History.
Even the cover is a really nice old time cover.
Let's see what year this is from.
On the inside, this is from 1881 and then there's a letter or an inscription dated 1882.
To Pet, I believe.
How many birthdays now have you tried?
How many boys take a baseball side?
How many days does a wonder last?
How many muses there in the past?
How many tails has a navy cat cab?
How many lives left for the cat?
How many syllables has this line?
How many lines has this form fine?
What can the answer be but vine?
I don't know.
Oh, look at this.
So definitely someone who's doing outside work.
Some great graphics.
Really nice colors.
Yes, copyright 1880.
Wow.
I bought, look how nice, The Council of Friends and Good Morning Birdie.
So I purchased this box of books for $7, I believe.
A cow working a pump.
Are those guinea pigs?
A guinea pig, yes.
I'm so glad they were included.
Who doesn't love a guinea pig?
These little pets are very careful in keeping themselves and they're also neat and tidy.
They're so cute.
So there's that book, this one, Deagy and the Fairy Princess.
I did not really look at the, oh, we have some kids artwork in the front.
The date is ripped out.
Lovingly dedicated to my husband,
whose early childhood provided a factual background for this fantasy.
Oh, at first I thought it was a unicorn with their little horses,
but they're in great colors.
Brown.
This looks very like Vantasia-ish from Disney.
He's making pigs out of clay, but not sure.
So there's that book.
This had all those kids artwork in the front.
Mother Goose Rhymes.
Let's see what year this is from.
1933.
There's some cute Humpty Dumpty.
That looks like it's pencil.
So that might be able to be erased.
That's Mind Your Commas.
Little Jack Horner.
There's a neat little clock.
Aw, the clock has a face on it.
See?
That's cute.
And that's 30 days, half September.
I still use this when I want to remember how many days are in a month.
There was an old man of Tobago.
Little star that shines so bright.
So this has some great, great graphics and poetry in it.
Then there was this book.
Pennsylvania Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure.
I took a look at this before, and it was pretty crazy.
1943.
Some of the laws that are in here, I don't know how that would fly today.
The Act of July 2, 1935 permits the showing of motion pictures after 2 p.m. on Sunday
in municipalities where the voters have approved of such Sunday motion pictures as provided by the Act.
Daylight saving time is meant in those places having such time.
Showing pictures before 2 p.m. on Sunday or showing them after 2 p.m. where not approved by the voters is a summary offense.
Penalty, fine of $50, and default of payment, 10 days imprisonment.
Oh, my gosh.
I'm going to have to read.
Some of these are crazy.
Fraudulent use of code of arms, tampering with electrical apparatus.
What's the fine for that?
Let's see.
Wow, that's long.
If you're caught, you know, destroying or injuring meter pipe conduit wire pole lamp.
It goes on.
So be sentenced to undergo imprisonment not exceeding six months or to pay a fine not exceeding $200 for both.
Nice.
I'll have to look more into this.
This is probably hours of enjoyment reading all these old laws.
Then I purchased some artwork.
I actually didn't even see these when I first looked through the box last.
They were outside leaning up against the wall, and I saw someone else looking through them, and I'm like, oh, they look kind of good.
You know, artwork doesn't have to always be, you know, signed by a famous person or made by a famous person for it to be worth something or to have someone look at it and say, I need that in my, you know, my living room.
That will complete my collection.
So this is one of those abstract pieces.
On the back, it's from S. Magnet Knapp in, I want to say New Gardens, but it looks like it's K, Kew Gardens, New York, and it's entitled Wild Ocean.
Maybe, there are pieces like these that are hung up in museums that are, you know, are thousands upon thousands of dollars.
It's like a dot in the middle of a white piece of paper.
I'm like, oh, that's worth, you know, five million.
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
So there's that one.
This one is neat.
I guess it would be held this way.
It does have a nice, you know, it's on, it's matted on board, and it looks like it is signed somewhat on the bottom.
You know, what is it?
I'm not sure.
At first, I thought it was this way.
Maybe it's like a ship in the water this way.
I don't know.
But I pretty much bought them, the lot, for the next two.
But one, I will have to censor.
This one, she is pretty.
Like, she's ready to go out on the town.
Maybe it's Easter time.
I'm not sure, but, you know, I think, I think someone that collects portraits.
Would definitely like this in their collection.
Now, the next one.
Paper to censor it.
Oh, there's stickers.
Oh, do you remember these?
Highlights?
They were in the paper that was in the book.
That brings back memories of the dinosaurs.
Oh, I got to show this.
I'm sorry, we're getting off topic.
Someone's artwork they had thrown in the book.
Maybe we can use Elvis to cover.
That would be appropriate.
Let's see.
We will.
Elvis might not be big enough.
Is this going to work?
Okay.
So, there's this lady.
It is a nude.
But, you know, it's older.
It has that vintage look to it.
And people that collect portraits, that collect nude paintings.
I think that they would want this in their collection.
Because of just how it's done.
The face, the paint strokes.
Again, you know, art doesn't have to be by some big name person.
It can just be, you know, by the woman that put an art studio up in her attic.
And she spent, you know, her evenings painting or her days painting.
So, this painting and then the lady before is the reason why I purchased this lot of paintings.
You know, I'm hoping to sell at the flea market this coming weekend.
So, I will bring those two along.
And I think that they will find a home.
So, we'll just have to wait and see.
So, not bad.
You know, small, small purchases.
You know, didn't come home with a car full.
But, again, sometimes that happens.
If I was interested in party supplies and paper plates, I could have had a whole car.
But, not interested.
Unless they were vintage.
That would have been cool.
So, yeah.
A few books.
Some artwork.
And we'll see what the next auction holds.
What the flea market holds this upcoming weekend.
Already thinking ahead.
So, I hope that you all enjoyed this video.
Going to the auction with me.
Seeing what's there.
Rummaging through some of the box lots.
And seeing what paper Moose purchased.
Thank you all again for watching.
And until next time, hope you all have a great day.
Thank you.
