Now, imagine not only going to war, but being kidnapped by the enemy, escaping the prison camp you’re locked in and then performing self-surgery in the middle of a jungle. Well, Robert “Jock” McLaren can imagine it, because he lived it.

By 1942, Robert McLaren was being held in his second enemy internment camp. There, he escaped with another inmate, and the two set out into the jungle where McLaren developed appendicitis shortly after. With no doctor for miles around, he had to make the most difficult decision of his life…
