Grieg composed this watchman's song after seeing a performance of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

William Shakespeare's tragedy called "The Tragedy of Macbeth" tells the story of the royal commander Macbeth and his rise to the throne of Scotland, his transformation into a regicide and other murders, and his downfall.

Macbeth explores the human desire for power and the predetermination of fate, including sin and guilt. A central theme of the drama is also divine right, an idea in which the king is at the centre of the state as a just ruler by the grace of God.

Can you hear the rise and fall of a ruler in the play? Aren't the wind instruments predestined to represent a royal destiny?
