“THE SHOCK” SURFING BRAZILS EXTREME WAVE! PART 1

FANATIC SURFING

The team is back in Huntington Beach. Somehow we show up, it's like the day of the year pumping
swell or something. Look out, Huntington Beach is like five six-foot barrels. The Wedge is barreling,
Newport's barreling. We're here, we're gonna tour some of the new Florence shops and we're gonna
go see the Florence headquarters. That's here and we're gonna do some awards thing tomorrow night.
Also big wave recap things happening here. So before our next adventure international
we're hearing some awards and see some friends.
MK, let's go. Miss you guys.
Hey check these out, so sign or sign here.
Where's Jack?
Some people.
Show us the fit.
Welcome.
I've watched this man on numerous accounts with no travel budget,
no commerce budget, travel over 40 hours across the world in economy into a six-hour drive
straight into squeezing into his wetsuit to serve a heavy slab, and I don't use the word heavy
lightly, that he's never served before alone in the freezing temperatures on a borrowed board,
minimum sleep, stiff body, no food, too much coffee, and it's only me or Zord with a handy cam
sitting on the edge of the cliff praying he makes it out alive. Not only has he survived
these life-threatening waves but he's performed at an optimal level setting new standards and
capabilities of what's possible at these spots. You might wonder why Nathan chose his wife out
of all these amazing watermen and women out there to present his award to him. The truth is he
doesn't like to inconvenience anyone and the idea of getting someone to take time out of their
day to speak highly about his accomplishments make him very, very uncomfortable. So I went
ahead and made a surprise video with a few words from some of my clients.
You are the example of when talent works hard. The results are undeniable.
Everybody wants to be a big wave surfer. Everybody wants to be a waterman.
Not too many people on this earth are willing to do what it actually takes to be the best.
I've had her sit in freezing cold in Scotland with a handy cam for an eight-hour session.
Growing up and getting into doing things like this, you know, it came about for all my brothers,
Ivan and John. I want to thank Mr. Cool himself, Ivan, for being here.
He may not think it was much what happened at the Olympics this year, but he brought our family
name to the Olympics. We've always just had a great relationship with the ocean and strove to
push what that means, whether it was performance-wise or trying to inspire a younger generation.
And that relationship with our ocean is now taken on a new level, right? We've had
these careers as athletes. Like I've said before, we're now running a brand together. I couldn't
have imagined a better turnout in life than to not only be paid and sponsored to surf,
but to be on one company together with my brothers and have a hand in running that.
It goes into the future. A lot of great industry leaders spoke up here, and it was
inspiring to hear Gordon. I want to congratulate him. Vince and Paul and everyone speak about the
industry where it is today and where it can go, and it just gets us so excited for the future
because we now have a hand in what that looks like. And for us, it's about being a leader,
not just what brands can do with environmental initiatives, but also in the way the athlete-brand
relationship works and our relationship with the ocean. So thank you, everyone, for having us.
We have to thank the man behind the lens, Zor Janko.
You can't have careers without someone like him there to film it, right? Everything is about
content, and Paul, as you saw, no one would have been able to see that without our bold,
I'd like to thank the rest of my sponsors for having us, and again, the awards and
a beautiful wife. Thank you, guys.
How cute! We made it to Brazil, staying right on the edge of shock. I got that.
Don't worry. Yeah, the edge tail of it.
Thank you for everything. He's been so freaking amazing.
An intro for us in Portuguese? Yeah, you can make it.
That's so sick.
Thank you. Let me do the official intro. We make no cuts. Okay, no cuts. We'll wipe it off.
The team has made it to Brazil. Mahina and I's first time. Mateus is kind enough to pick us up
from the airport, and our goal is to surf some slabs. So the slab tours has come to Brazil,
and Zor's been here before, but two different parts, and so we're very excited. We're stoked
to be here, see some new friends, see some old friends, maybe link up with Lucas Chumbo and Gordo,
surf the shock. They got an event tomorrow, and the shock is huge today, but it's windy,
and so over the next few days, we're hoping to surf it, maybe tow it, maybe paddle it,
and we'll see what we find. Brazil slab tour starts now, so we're psyched.
Shock's not too friendly today, huh? Is it ever friendly?
Yeah. Cheers. Let's go check the shock. It's crazy. So we're here in Brazil, slab tour.
Intro'd yesterday. A local filmmaker here, Mateus, has been helping us out, pick us up. We met a
couple other local filmmakers and surfers yesterday, a little walk tour down the beach.
Linking up with the guy I had met, we're going to go tow the shock today. Looks psycho. Crazy
looking wave. Very limited paddle out zones at this size, as you guys can see. It's pure chaos
down there. We're probably going to jump on a ski around the corner. They're going to have a tow
event at the beach break next door, this huge wedge, and we're going to tow some slabs here,
and then as the swell calms down, maybe paddle, either later this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
So sick. So good to be in a new place. Loving Brazil already. We've only been here for one day.
People are just psyched and fired up and very friendly,
and so we're going to get amongst it. It's huge, super heavy, powerful looking wave.
Probably different than any slab I've surfed. A lot more water on the surface moving around.
It's a short slab, but it's got a lot of backwash and lump, and if you fall, you pretty much end up
in this crazy zone. Starting off with a bunch of hydrators today. Important after flying.
Going to be on my 6'2 to begin the day. 6'2, and I was going to wear this.
I don't think I'm going to wear my 3'2. It's cold. Who's this cool guy?
Going to go. Okay. Have fun.
Let's go. So he has the phone, so everything you need, just call, and then we can set here.
But I think he's okay. Great. Let's go. My tow partner.
Hey, we saw two good ones, huh? Yeah.
Where is he? There he is. There he is.
Yeah, arms are pretty cooked. We'll try tomorrow. Okay.
We did our best. Yeah.
Is that low gas? Is that what that beeping is? My biceps.
The frames are so sick.
One section, it would have been good.
So close.
Where'd you move the GoPro? Yeah, it looks crazy.
I didn't have the 360, I just had the mouth up. Crazy.
It was really hard out there. It was like, the chops looked the same as the waves.
That's the real, like we couldn't see. Yeah, yeah.
We did as good as we can. Yeah.
I hope you're not disappointed.
Because this size is crazy. Yeah, yeah.
Okay. And you need a little bit of luck there.
Yeah, perfect.
Yeah. So, me and Beg, he towed me today. We went out, first time to the shock.
You could say I got the full shock experience.
Got two waves. The first one was really big. I think it would have been good,
but it was a little bit too deep. And then we tried, but the towing,
we couldn't see anything. There was so much wonk out there. The ocean was just non-stop,
crazy, chaos. The chops were as big as the waves, and so it was hard to read it, but
we did the best we could. We chose this, we tried to choose the safest waves as possible,
but the shock is heavy. These guys are cowboys over here.
Whoever started surfing this wave, it's out of their mind.
So, we're having a good first day here in Brazil, and thank you for coming.
So, epic first day in Brazil. Zord? Thoughts?
