The Story of Ceramics and Porcelain

Hi guys. It's been a while since I've made a piece of pottery and doing a movie so
tonight's the night and this is clay from Maryland. It's actually two clays that we're
blending, two Maryland clays we're blending together. So I don't know how many of you know
that I've been making pottery on the wheel for 63 years. I started when I was 10 years old.
I got kind of serious at it when I was 16, 17. I went to the New York State College of Ceramics
at Alfred University upstate New York. This clay is very plastic which is nice but it doesn't
shrink a lot. Look how it's very creamy. I like that. Okay this is going to be a pitcher.
I always have a picture in my mind of what I'm going to make before I actually do it.
I've heard potters say, oh the clay tells me what to make. Well clay isn't like that. It doesn't tell
you what to do. It messes up like that. Sometimes if I pull on it too much it'll start to twist.
But a friend of mine in the UK he uses the term that the clay dances so it
it just jiggles around a little bit. This tool is called a rib because years ago they used to use
animal bones, ribs, and it's a shaping tool. So sometime tomorrow morning I'll be putting a
handle on this piece. Right now it's too soft. It'll lose its shape and I have to spout.
This is how I take them off. I use this is fishing line and two washers. Cut underneath it.
Hug it like a little baby and set it down.
There. You guys have a blessed evening and now it's 10 o'clock at night. We're gonna
eat our supper now. So okay you guys are the best. Thank you.
