Hello, this is Renee and Tom and I are on the Ultimate World Cruise, and we just docked in Oslo, Norway.
Well, not quite. Took several hours to go through the Oslo fjords.
Before we could start going through the fjords, the harbor pilot got on board, and as we approach Oslo,
we passed Gaskerborg Fortress, a site of great historical significance.
This is where the Battle of Dumbrock Sound took place, and the German heavy cruiser Blücher was sunk during World War II.
This occurred on April 9th, 1940.
This action delayed the German invasion, allowing the Norwegian royal family and the government to escape, giving Norway more time to mobilize its defenses.
You can still see oil on the water today from the sunken ship.
This is an underwater ward, so there is no ships that can pass on that side of the island, so the traffic are forced to go on this side of the island.
Once we are docked and cleared to leave the ship, we'll walk nearly 8 miles today.
We are greeted by the Oslo Tree, which is custom art.
The captain also stated that we are on the exact same latitude as Alaska's Skagway.
Oslo is the capital of Norway, which boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1040.
Originally named after King Christian IV, it was renamed Oslo in 1925.
We then hop on a tram to go to Vigeland Park.
This unique sculpture park was created by Gustav Vigeland and is home to over 200 sculptures and offers an immersive experience into the artist's vision.
It was crafted throughout the 1920s to 1943.
This park encompasses a sprawling 80 acres.
It also holds the distinction of being the world's most expansive collection of sculptures crafted by a single artist.
The first section we encountered was the bridge, which features 58 bronze sculptures depicting people of various ages and stages of life.
The sculptures in Vigeland Park are a profound exploration of human condition depicting a range of emotions and experiences from birth to death.
We continued to walk beyond the bridge is a large fountain surrounded by 20 tree-like sculptures that represent the cycle of human life.
The fountain design symbolizes life, death, and rebirth.
From here we walked up to the monolith.
This is a 14 meter tall granite column and is carved with 121 entwined human figures and is a powerful symbol of human togetherness and struggle.
What's really crazy is this sculpture was carved from a single block of granite, which was transported to the park in 1926.
Vigeland and a team of masons worked tirelessly to complete the intricate carvings and the process took 14 years.
Surrounding the monoliths are 36 granite groups that depict various aspects of human condition.
These include themes of childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, along with emotions such as joy, despair, love, and sorrow.
The monolith symbolizes human unity, struggle, and the secular nature of life.
The figures seem to climb over and support each other representing the complexity of interconnectedness of human life.
The monolith is considered one of Gustav Vigeland's greatest artistic achievements.
It showcases his ability to convey complex human emotions and relationships through sculpture.
After the monolith we keep walking till we hit the Wheel of Life. The Wheel of Life is a circular sculpture made of granite.
It features intertwined human figures arranged in a circle holding on to each other and forming a continuous loop.
From here we take the long trek back to the tram. It was an absolute gorgeous day in Oslo today.
Tom and I successfully navigated the tram system today.
We ended up walking through a bunch of neighborhoods and found this local pizza place.
It was takeout only so we found a spot to eat.
After lunch, we visited the majestic Royal Palace, an iconic landmark that stands proudly in the heart of Oslo.
Although we went in the back way,
it's the official residence of the Norwegian monarch.
The Royal Palace was constructed in the 19th century and completed in 1849.
It serves as the residence of the current monarch King Harald V and Queen Sonja.
As we walk around the building, this is how we know we came in the back way. Here's the front.
The statue of King Carl Johan.
He played a significant role in Scandinavian history, particularly in the union between Sweden and Norway.
We left there and saw a live speech in front of the university we think it was someone from parliament.
From there our journey continued to the National Theater, which is a cornerstone of the Norwegian culture in performing arts.
The historical theater has been showcasing Norwegian talent since the late 19th century.
From here we walk to the Storting building, which was the seat of the Norwegian parliament.
It was completed in 1866.
From a distance
we saw the Oslo Cathedral and the cathedral's clock tower was added in the mid-19th century and the cathedral was built in
1697. The Nobel Peace Center, which was inaugurated June 11, 2005.
Spaceman, who's seven meters high and was unveiled November 8, 2023.
As our day came to an end in Oslo, we headed back to the ship.
When we were in last night, we were able to see
glimpses of it, but tonight is supposed to be really strong.
So if you are up and about out of dark, please keep an eye to the skies.
And there is a very good chance that you will have spectacular northern lights.
But just when we thought our adventure was over, we retreated to the magical northern lights, a natural phenomenon that was perfect ending to an unforgettable day.
Here's our itinerary for the next four ports. Hey everyone,
I'm thrilled to announce that my very first children's book is now published. Join Alphanet or Al,
our adventurous elephant, as he sets sails on an exciting journey across the seas.
Can't wait for y'all to meet Al and join him on his nautical adventures and thank you all for your support.
And I hope you and your little ones enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I'll leave a link in the description below. Happy reading!
