It is wine down Wednesday and today we are talking all things orange wine. I mean aren't you glad
it's a wine day? I knew there was going to be some fun. Of course there had to be, there had to be.
Now we know that orange wines are not only a trend but they really kind of give us a glimpse into
what wine making was like in the past. Yeah. I mean what does that look like Megan? Yeah so orange
wine is a really unique wine. A lot of people haven't heard of it but it is making a comeback.
You know it's it's actually a very a natural wine. It's considered one of those natural
wines with low intervention. So you know people who are want something lower intervention kind
of crafty they're digging these very funky orange wines. Oh we like a funky wine. It is funky. What
makes it so funky? So orange wine is made kind of like the way that rosé wine is made. Okay.
So rosé wine is made with the red grapes and it has contact with the skin. The skin is fermented
in it. So orange wine is made the same way but with white grapes. Yes. So you know we think of
all we we have our red wine, we have our rosé wine, we have our white wine but we also have
orange wine to add to it. Oh my gosh. To kind of make it a little more confusing. Just a little
bit more confusing you know. And these are like bolder wines. They're not super sweet. No no this
has a lot of character. So like this baby here if we open this up and we pour this in here you're
gonna see just like if you can I don't know if you're gonna see it in camera but it is
you can see almost like the sediment in there. It's very cloudy. The texture is very thick.
It is very bold. Very complex. Smell it. Oh. Do you like it? It is very bold. It is very bold. It
does not smell sweet. It's not very no no this one is from Spain. It's not very sweet. It's
delicious though yeah. I like that you said it's delicious. Now what does an orange wine pair well
with? I mean we know a lot of our reds go well with those heavy meats. Yeah. Those whites can go
well with seafood. What is orange? So orange wine since it is a little bit more complex and it is
more bold you can actually pair it like a red wine. Yeah so you you know this would go well
with like a rich dish. It would go well with steak even. But also because it does have a little bit
of the citrusy component to it you can pair it with seafood and it's going to go beautifully
with it. So it's a it's kind of an all-around wine. It's an all-around wine but it is not made
with oranges. We're myth-busting today. We are myth-busting. There is nothing to do with oranges.
There's no orange flavor. It's all still 100 percent grape. When I first heard of orange
wine I was like oh I thought that. It's no it's just the color. It's just the color yeah. Okay
now I like that you said this can be paired with a lot of different entrees. Yeah. You have options
when it comes to wine but really when we talk about orange wine we also can talk about how
this is a good transitional wine from summertime into the fall. I love that. I think that's such a
good. Yes you're on point there. I did my homework a little bit. Yeah so summer you're drinking lighter
now it's getting a little bit more you know even today here it's a little misty. Just a little bit.
I mean this would go awesome today right. That's a great transition wine and the color like I mean
it's fall. Right. It's gonna look good. It looks good in your glass. It makes it you know almost
like that pumpkin spice latte. I mean the pumpkin spice is already hitting the shelves. We may as
well add some orange wine to the mix right. Yeah yeah. Okay I like that. Well if people are at home
they're watching where can they start if they've never dipped their toes in the orange wine pool
what are some options that you recommend? So it it's not as easy to find as the rest of the wine
so I would go to a specialty store. You know I found these two at Wine and Cheese Place. You
can find it at Total Wine but ask ask them you know it's going to probably be in the natural
wine section. Okay. Or you can look in the regions that it comes from so like this one's from Italy
here and this one here is from Spain. I like that. So we have a few different options when it comes
to orange wine. Yeah. And it really is a nod to how wine was created in centuries past. So Megan
thank you so much for breaking it down for us today figuring out what we can pair with this
glorious and beautiful orange wine and no orange wine is not made with oranges. Thank you so much.
Don't go anywhere St. Louis will be right back after this quick commercial break.
