This video, which includes parent testimonials, is the first of a series recently produced at CDC for the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of newborn screening in the United States.
I remember hearing about newborn
screening but I always thought oh you
know that doesn't matter it doesn't
apply to me you know I'm going to have a
healthy

child nobody really necessarily wants to
speak about it because we don't want to
talk about the wh ifs or the May or the
could be I mean newborn
screening literally saved my son's life
without it you know we'd be living a
different Journey it's really a blessing
because we don't realize those Treasures
that we can find in in in a trial that
we go through it opens up that door and
tells
you this is the way you have to go now
it's not just a heel prick test there's
so much more to newborn screening that
you continue to use throughout your
journey once diagnosis occurs you never
know what the outcome can be and you
don't know what you don't know so until
you take the testing and you take those
steps to really begin that process you
never know for a lot of people after
those results it can be lifechanging
there is
no standard for all across all states it
varies state to state so if you had um a
child in one state and have moved it's
not going to necessarily look or feel
the same if our daughter had been born
in New York just 3 hours North she would
have been screened and our story would
be completely different 3 weeks after
our daughter died I attended my first
newborn screening Advisory board meeting
that began my 6 years plus now of
attending these meetings and learning
more about the system my bill was signed
into law on November 25th of
2020 and now those kids have the
opportunity because of her as a new mom
I was just blissfully unaware that
anything bad could happen to my child I
just wish that I would have known that
it can happen to you like she looked so
healthy and she was doing all the things
that baby should do and I'm a person
that tends to believe that everything
just works out obviously was very
shocking to us but everything from that
point has been so hopeful and there was
a community that greeted us on the other
side and that's what I want to be part
of
