Elevated as a community-based museum concept, it is expected to be a door to recognize the story of events and various historical flows that occurred in Kotagede as a whole & its relationship to locations that are still preserved to this day. The traditions that are still preserved and preserved in Kotagede are a tourist attraction, so that the museum is present as the initial information center for the Kotagede Living Museum.
Visitors are presented with the potential of 4 clusters in Kotagede, namely the Archaeological Site and Historical Landscape Cluster, the Traditional Technology Skills Cluster, the Literary Performing Arts Cluster, Customs-Traditions and Daily Life, and the Social Movement Cluster.
In the archeology and history cluster, for example, visitors can see relics in the form of artifacts, buildings, cultural heritage, and others. The traditional skills cluster contains information on architectural heritage and silver crafts.
The literary, performing arts, and traditional customs cluster encompasses the creative abilities of Kotagede's art and culinary specialties such as Kipo and Waru. Meanwhile, the social movement cluster is related to the historical journey related to the emergence and development of Kotagede's social and community organizations. Including its role in Indonesian independence.
The Kotagede Museum is based on the environmental situation outside the museum walls, but a meeting point is still needed to be an anchor for the existence of the Kotagede Museum itself. Therefore, this point is called the Kotagede Museum: Intro Living Museum which occupies the Rumah Kalang cultural heritage building located on Jl. Tegalgendu, Kotagede, Yogyakarta which functions as an information center regarding the potential of the Kotagede cultural heritage area.
The Rumah Kalang building and several collections in the Kotagede museum came from grants from figures and the people of Kotagede. The Rumah Kalang which is now an asset of the DIY Regional Government previously belonged to B.H. Noerijah, one of the Wong Kalang figures. Wong Kalang helped shape the identity of Kotagede, not only because the building has a distinctive architectural character, but also its role in social, cultural and economic matters.
The Kalang house building, which was built in stages in 1931-1938, combines many styles, with unique patterns, different from other architecture of its time. There are traditional Javanese, Chinese, and European building styles that form the architectural identity of the Kalang House.
