Gardeners and florists will once again parade through the city center on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. The Gardeners' Day with a stand concert and parade is one of the oldest traditions in Munich.
After the end of the plague in the 17th century, Munich's monastery gardeners gave new hope to the frightened survivors with gifts of flowers, fruit and vegetables. At the same time, they swore an oath before the gardeners' patron saint Gertrude to organize a procession and thanksgiving service in St. Peter's Church every first Tuesday in August.
Over time, commercial and palace gardeners joined in this custom. The Munich Gardeners' Association, with around 100 members, has continued this tradition for 154 years.
Today, around 1000 gardeners and florists take part in the Gardeners' Day, including horticultural groups from the city and the surrounding area, the young gardeners' associations, vegetable and flower gardeners from the Munich wholesale flower market and gardeners from the Munich Botanical Garden.
