I'm about to blow y'all's mind because
if you've been on the internet at all
and you are into birthday decorating or
anything along those lines just like
aent decorating you've probably seen
these craft paper banners okay I have
seen them all over the place I've even
had them painted um like for my
daughter's birthdays and I just want you
guys to know that you can do this on
your own so I'm going to show you today
how you can take a cardboard box and
your cell phone and make your own design
and make your own little birthday
banners y'all are going to be hooked
this is the coolest craft project I've
done in so long and I cannot wait to
show you guys how to do this so let's go
ahead and go over what you're going to
need to complete this project so you're
going to need a cell phone that has a
flashlight obviously I've got a
flashlight here or you can just use any
standard flashlight um you're going to
need some inkjet transparency film now I
have written in permanent marker here
which side is the front which side is
the back because it does matter when
you're using inkjet transparency film
which side you print on but this paper
is not super expensive um you can get on
Amazon I'm going to link everything down
below in the description for you guys
but this stuff has come in such good
handy for lots of different craft
projects and it's perfect for what we're
going to be doing today so inkjet
transparency film
I've got a box here this just like
literally a standard box I want to say
I'll tell you guys the size measurements
on this but y'all it does not matter
that much how big or small your box is
this one is a little over 12
in by a little almost a foot it's almost
a square box okay so nothing super crazy
just a box that you've got laying around
that you don't mind to cut
into and then I've just got some tape
for the Box I've got this roll of craft
paper now this is the Dollar Tree
element they have these rolls at the
Dollar Tree you're going to be able to
get probably two or three banners out of
this craft paper roll so you're going to
get more than one and it's only $125 for
a roll of this which I think is such a
good deal and then obviously you're just
going to need some paint in the color
scheme of your choice so we're going to
be doing a cute little Tutti Frutti
happy birthday banner for Holly's little
girl in the studio and I've just got
some paint brushes here in a variety of
sizes as well and you're also going to
need to make sure you've got some white
paint cuz we're working with this craft
paper Brown when you go in with colors
like yellow or orange if you don't put a
white base on them they're very dull so
we want to make sure everything is
popping off of that craft paper so we'll
put down a white base first and then
I've also got some black just for the
letters and stuff like that you're going
to need a box
cutter and that is everything that's it
you guys obviously you're going to need
a printer because we're printing on
inkjet transparency film and we are
using the Canon Pixma I'm going to link
everything below for you guys so if you
want to get your hands on a new printer
that's the one that we recommend so once
you get into canva we're going to create
our design so I'm just going to select
created a design here and then we're
going to go to custom size now we're
going to be printing this on an 8 1/2 by
11 sheet of paper so technically we
could put it on that size document but
we've got to consider the shape of our
Banner which is more rectangular so I'm
going to make this 8 by 4 so we're going
to do 8 by 4 in and then we're going to
create a new design and then from here
you can start adding in elements that
relate to your party now you've got to
remember this is going to be the shadow
of whatever element you put on it so you
don't want to get anything that has a
lot of detail unless you have an
artistic hand and you can go in and
paint those details later what's going
to help a lot right here is picking
basic shapes and basic fonts that you
can trace that have a simple outline so
we're going to start by adding our text
and I'm going to just start with happy
birthday and we're going to be using the
font Mary
Catherine this is a makers going to
learn font if you are new to our Channel
we are a membership based crafty
subscription service so you basically
become a member and then you get access
to all of our fonts and our files we've
got thousands upon thousands of both and
then you can use them for your own
personal use as well as commercial use
so we've got happy birthday right here
I'm going to add some
spacing just a little bit and then I'm
going to duplicate
that and we're going to type in
Emerson we're going to do this font in a
script just to give it
some
playfulness and this font is called Baby
Cakes this is one of my favorite script
fonts I am going to Kern the letters so
they're a little bit closer to one
another and then we can make it a little
bit
bigger so cute and now we can go in and
add add our fruits so we're doing a
Tutti Frutti theme so there's going to
be lots of cute little fruits that we
can use
here and we're going to use these shapes
from the maker going to learn website
which I think are
adorable and we're going to throw in a
little pineapple over here
now the fruits are behind the words and
so if we want to separate the fruits
from the words you can actually add a
stroke on your text meaning there's an
outline around your letters so I'm just
going to select this happy birthday then
come up here to effects and we're going
to select outline and then I'm going to
change this from a gray outline to a
white outline and it's at a 50 point
thickness which is actually perfect for
what I need but I'm just going to copy
and do the same exact thing for Emerson
as well so I'm going to select Emerson
select outline and then change that to
White which kind of separates the text
from the actual images so you're still
able to move these images around if you
want to and you can move the words
around but it still keeps them separated
now we are using colored images here so
before we go to save it we're going to
need to change these fruits to either a
black or super dark gray so what I'm
going to do is select the image and then
we're going to go to
edit and I'm going to go to Duo
tone and you can see there's this mono
option here this is going to darken it
which is going to allow us to get a
better Shadow effect when we actually go
to emit the shadow onto the wall so we
want to make sure that these images are
super dark and if for some reason that's
not dark enough you can even go to
adjust
and you can turn that brightness all the
way
down okay this is going to make it
completely dark so I've turned the
brightness all the way down the contrast
all the way up and then the Highlight
can just stay where it's at so we'll
repeat so with the
pineapple we'll just turn the brightness
all the way down and the contrast all
the way up so once everything is
completely blackened we're going to go
ahead and hit share and download so
we're going to be downloading this as a
PNG with a transparent background if you
don't have pro access that's totally
fine just download it as it is your
printer is not going to print the white
part anyways and then I'm just going to
hit
download so now we will just open up our
image and you can see there's a white
outline around it obviously that is
totally fine it's not really going to
print anything anyways we just need
these black elements so that we can get
a Trace so from here I'm going to go
file
print and make sure you have your
correct printer selected I'm going to go
to media and quality so we can feed it
from the rear tray and then I'm going to
select best
quality and then we're going to go to
layout and I am going to select flip
horizontally now for some reason you
don't see this you can save your image
pull it back into canva and then flip
your image that way because you can't
just flip text in canva easily um let me
actually show you guys how to do that
just in case you are unsure so let's say
that you wanted to flip this image let
me show you if I select everything it's
not going to give me the option to flip
my image if I select just this pineapple
it does give me the option if I select
the words it doesn't give me the option
so what you need to do is save it as a
PNG just like we did we're going to
duplicate this page
or add a
page and then we're going to upload what
we just saved so that happy birthday PNG
we're going to upload that from our
downloads okay it's sitting in our
downloads and now it thinks it's an
image so canva thanks it's an image
meaning it's going to allow us to flip
our image so you can select it pop it in
and then we're going to be able to flip
okay does that make sense so that way
everything is on one level it's easily K
is going to think that it's an image so
we can flip it horizontally and then you
can save it and just print it as is or
you can do it how we did it the first
time where we saved it and then we
mirrored it from the print dialogue
box and then just go ahead and hit
print okay so I did explain you guys how
to flip your image but honestly y'all
this is a inkjet transparency film
meaning it's transparent so if you need
to flip your image you can simply flip
your paper over okay easy peasy right so
this is our piece now I did not change
the duo tone on our pineapple and it did
come out a little yellow and green
that's okay we'll reprint it so that
it's completely black so you are going
to need to make sure to use the duo tone
filter and then lower your contrast to
make everything completely black but
really this is so dark it's still going
to cast The Shadow pretty well so make
sure everything's super dark and then
from there you're going to need to get
your box all right so this doesn't have
to be super neat or anything as long as
your design is showing you're going to
be good to go so I'm going to just take
a sharpie and kind of trace a
line can even kind of put some dots down
here
and then just make sure that your design
fits within the square that you're
drawing on
here okay and then we'll just set this
to the side get your handy dandy box
cutter and we're going to cut this
Square out be super careful here
okay and then you want to make sure
you're putting your image onto your box
reversed and we're just going to take
some tape and make sure that our design
is taped to our
box all right and then from there this
is where we're going to put the phone in
the box we're going to project it on the
wall and we will start tracing so let's
go over and we're going to get that done
okay so I'm just going to roll this all
the way out I'm going to put some tape
down on one side so it kind of holds
it while I'm trying to work and then we
can put it up on the
wall that would be great like just lay
it over
[Applause]
okay so then we're going to take our box
that we made we're going to put our
phone down inside of it with the
flashlight on okay flashlights on I
don't know if you guys can see that and
it's going to go inside your box okay
now we're going to place it and we may
have have to move it we may have to
adjust have to like prop it on some
stuff but we're going to get it we're
going to figure it out and it's going to
work so you can kind of
see you can kind of see right now we've
got the lights
on can y'all see we're getting like a
very faint projection
here let's turn the lights off and
you''ll really be able to see it since I
have
my actually doing it go ahead
all right so I finished tracing this it
really did not take that long you guys
um you probably can't even see it from
where you're at but we're about to paint
it white so you're really going to be
able to see it but this was so easy to
trace I just I can't believe I've waited
this long to create one of these I was
so intimidated by it and it was just so
easy so we're going to lay this on the
table and we're going to start painting
so I've got some different Deco art
paints here you can use whatever brand
of acrylic paint that you prefer just
make sure if you are using lots of color
that you get a good amount of white
because we're going to need to paint
everything white first and then we'll go
back in with the colors because a lot of
times when you're using colors
especially like yellow and orange on
this brown they're very transparent so
you want to make sure everything's
painted white and then go back and paint
the top coat with the color so we're
going to start off with the white and
paint everything that's going to be
colored in white and I think we're going
to do our words in Black so we won't
actually have to do those twice we can
just go straight in with the black and
paint them that color so I'm going to
start by painting our first coat on the
fruits and I'm just going to put our
paint on a paper
plate just Kicking It Old School nothing
fancy and then I recommend any of the
horse hair paint brushes most of the
time these have the blue handles if you
go to um Hobby Lobby and they have Brown
bristles the black tacon wash setet is
really good um but the blue handles with
the brown hairs those are my absolute
favorite these are honestly not bad
either though so I'm going to get out I
like these rounded tip ones let me show
you all the difference really quick so
depending on what you're painting
honestly like don't overthink this I'm
just giving you guys a little bit of
advice if you're painting something that
has rounded edges or is a little bit
more
cartoony such as this birthday banner a
rounded Edge brush is going to be better
if you're painting something a little
bit more crisp or modern or precise a
square tip brush is going to be better
so like this one but I personally like
my style fits with these rounded brushes
a little bit more so that's what I'm
going to be using but if you're just
really confused because I know there's
thousands of brushes y'all don't
overthink the brushes just get you a
variety set and then figure it out from
there okay
so we're going to go ahead and get
started we're going to speed this up so
you guys don't have to sit and watch me
paint for however long this takes me I'm
hoping not very long though so we shall
see
[Music]
all right so we finished painting it now
we're going to go hang it up so you guys
can get a good final shot I think you
all are going to love it
all right what did you all think about
it I think this turned out so cute and
honestly it's one of the funnest crafts
