MAKING SOME CHANGES / ALLOTMENT GARDENING UK

[Music] good morning guys welcome back to my lopment Diaries my name is Emma these the allotment Diaries um it's supposed to be quite a nice sunny day today so I thought I would get down here quite early get on with a few jobs and stuff while the weather is still nice I don't know if it's going to stay nice today that's the thing we are we do tend to wake up with quite nice blue skies and sun and then we have this big band of cloud come over and it has been quite rainy and drizzly as well so I really don't know what's going on with the weather at the moment I think we are predicted a few really nice hot days so I need to do a little bit of preparation for that just in case I can't get here obviously my kids on summer holidays at the moment so when we have really nice days it's nice to get out and do something with them so I can't always make it down here but I do need to make sure the plot's okay the pond definitely needs topping up um I'm going to do a little bit of weeding little bit of watering but first we're going to feed Einstein but we're also going to think about Einstein cuz I brought some paint with me so let me let me explain see we got some nice Sun at the moment so the plot is looking really really nice and colorful and beautiful so over here this is where I have my Einstein feeding stations so he's happy with this having food here this is my new Contraption now the M worms that I put in there before look they've almost completely been eating it or they are all gone so at some point he probably coming in here and eating them or maybe something else is but a lot of people have said the colors are not good for a robin because it's yellow and red and normally in a garden that kind of means danger so if bugs are red or sort of yellow and striped and stuff it just tells Birds to stay away from them so I'm I'm agreeing with I think the colors on this are probably wrong so what we're going to do today is we're actually going to paint it we're going to paint it it's just such a nice little bird feeder I cannot stand the idea of wasting it and if it's the colors that's putting them off then so be it we will change the colors for him you know or do anything for that little bird if it means seeing him in a hot air balloon there's not much I wouldn't do to see him in this so we're going to paint it right so I've gone with green and white um these are just little tester paints basically but I figured that if he doesn't like green and white he's he pretty much in trouble isn't he cuz everything in the garden is like green and white is I mean white is not a scary color there is nothing scary about the color white except ghosts but I don't think Einstein thinks about ghosts to be honest right how do I open this cuz I don't want to use the little roller [Music] it's not the greatest paint job in the world I really hope he appreciates this I don't think he will actually I don't even think he will I think he just probably just doesn't like it full stop he's probably just like I'm not getting in that thing why have you brought me that I'm a bird I'm like because it's fun Einstein sometimes it's fun just to have fun come on Bird right there we go he's painted now um so all those harsh colors are gone he could probably do with another couple of coats but I won't do that today because you know we're in the garden we're not here to paint I hope he appreciates the effort I've gone to I actually think it looks nicer in these colors than the red and yellow I think the red and yellow are a little bit Brash you know bit in your face so I'm going to hang it up to um dry I think that's the easiest way to let it dry is just to hang it up but I'm not going to put his little basket on cuz I don't want him going on the paint I like it I actually really like those colors right let's hang him up look how much more that blends in to the trees and the surrounding how can you not like that I actually much prefer that it's a lot less than your face isn't it I really really like it those colors I think it's a great idea um yeah I I think he's more likely to go in it now as well I can understand I actually understand it now now that I've actually seen it in those colors against the tree and stuff I really I genuinely understand that he probably would have been scared to go in it otherwise so that makes a lot of sense yeah I'm really really chuff with that bit of a random first job to start with but you know you might be surprised to know that's not the weirdest thing I've ever done at my alotment plot so there we go he [Music] honestly you give them all a big structure to climb up and what do they do they just want to climb in the air he's like look help me help me it's there it's there silly [Music] plants so the two cucumbers I planted on my new structure they are still alive there they are aren't they looking great they've actually got a couple of flowers on them too let me show you so we got a little flower no wait we've got a little baby cucumber there that's a little baby cucumber oh my goodness and there's one on here too little baby cucumber I think it's the prickly cucumbers the ones that you can't eat the skin or something I don't even know what type these are but wow oh my goodness look that's a baby cucumber there I know I know I know stop stop touching it Emma cuz it's going to just fall off okay so that's the actual that's that's the biggest cucumber I've ever grown in my life so we're already beating our record right now cuz I've never grown a cucumber cumber I've grown a cucumber plant and it's got to that big and then just died so this is the biggest cucumber officially that I've ever grown that's it I've beat my record so far cuz the record the bar was set very low oh there's another one there oh gosh oh guys you're doing so well I'm so proud of you what I was going to do before I got all flustered I'm going to put a little bit twine along here and just make sure they've got enough structure to climb up because I'm worried that he's sort of flopping a little bit this is probably not totally completely necessary but I just want to make sure they've got enough to climb up and not flop over that be the worst thing that could happen right now is that they flop over and die where oh my strangling him sorry I'm sorry mate I'm sorry please don't die was thinking just like this just give him a little bit more to climb up because I I took another look at some other people's structures and they had more canes so it was closer together the squares were not quite as big so I'm thinking because they're quite little plants there you are it gives them a little something to climb up now there you are mate you're all right oh how exciting right I need to clip back some of these weeds at the back of the plot they have become little bit too overgrown and I'm worried that if I leave the plot for a few days because I am going on holiday soon so I'm sort of aware that I'm going to be away for a little bit um I don't want that to just spill over onto everything so I'm just going to give it a little bit of a chop back I think [Music] [Music] it's really been a bit of an education this year in terms of like the weeds and stuff at my plot so when I made this I don't know if you remember if you look back at some of my videos You'll see there's loads of logs and old sticks and stuff lined up at the back here that I thought would make quite a nice fence I had no idea that underneath it there was so many like weeds waiting to come up and this is just what's happened it's just all come up like crazy now the only good thing about this is that I know for a fact that in the winter time this all dies back and I'll see all the sticks again and then I'll be able to dig it all out properly probably put some membrane underneath some wood chip and stop this from happening again but when you put your plot when it's your first year it's very difficult to know what it's going to do and you do kind of get these areas that are like I don't know they just sort go a bit crazy and you're like what happened what happened but it's definitely something I'm going to work on on the Autumn winter time and really sort out so that this does not happen again it's just like any new Garden you just have to have it for a year and just learn learn about it and learn what happens and then adapt and change you know [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh oh oh [Music] right this here which looks seemingly like a weed but it's not a weed this is actually I think a Logan berry look at that see it's giv me berries but look how tall it's got so this needs something to climb up I think so we're going to have to make a little structure for him right we'll keep it very simple because we can't think of anything more complicated anyway simple it's going to have to be [Music] [Music] that's as far as I got with the uh the idea I was just sort of hoping the next bit would come to me magically um net should I just use a net I always say I'm not going to use a net and then I end up using a net think maybe a net or maybe like do I have any let's go investigate the shed and see what I've got I might have some more Garden mesh hiding somewhere let's have a look I know what you're all thinking how did this happen again I don't know guys it just happens I think it's my chaotic brain I just cannot keep the shed tidy right is there any Garden mesh under there what's that oh it's little burning thing I could do some fires that's quite exciting um what could I use I just feel like because it's a Logan Berry I feel like it's it needs more support what's that that's a net net should we just use a net let's just use a net let's try with a net and then we can get some Garden mesh we have to order some I think I'm not really sure if a net is going to be quite strong enough for this kind of plant but I think we'll give it a go is what we've got it's already been cut this one so this is good the N there [Music] even going to yeah already that's good sign long if you want you like this there I don't if he likes it or not do you think he likes it there I don't know maybe I need another stick think it needs another stick if and doubt always use another stick that's what I say oh I don't know maybe we'll just put some color balls on the top and it might look a bit more like a normal structure that one's falling down now oh God [Music] I think actually another good um use for it would be I could throw a net over the entire thing and cover it um so the birds don't come and eat the fruit I don't think there a problem at the moment because there's only one there should I just pick it and eat it I think actually this one looks like it's gone way past itself cell by dat so I'm not going to eat that one but this one looks nice and red so I think I'm going to just eat him I think it's a Logan Berry correct me if I'm wrong way because I can't remember it's always ants and wasps okay I think we're good it's very sour was the other one done maybe this one would be nicer very sour how do you make them sweet things every single Berry that I've ever eaten on this alotment has been sour am I just too early to the party usually this is a black current here I've got loads of black currents on it sorry correction guys I did have loads of black currents on it I think the birds have got to this so I'm going to have to net this as well think about some kind of net um I've never eaten one of these before I love black black currant juice but I've never eaten a black currant I'm 99% sure this is going to be sour too but we're going to try it anyway it's definitely sour I don't dislike The Taste I've never tasted that before for that is weird that does not that does not taste like Robinson's drink that is a very strange taste well actually do you know what I these are the first year that I planted these so I actually think they'd take a couple of years to get going and get like real proper Harvest from them so I'm not too worried this year about the birds eating them more and stuff I think it's more about just letting them grow letting them do their thing and then hopefully next year we'll get a much better Harvest hopefully hey if you don't fall down [Music] right that's it for me today um so I'm going to head on home there not tons of job jobs for me to do here at the moment it's just mainly kind of maintenance jobs um but I love it I love it that's what I love most about the allotment is just all these little pottering around jobs they're like my favorite I have just ordered my uh Christmas potatoes I've ordered Charlotte potatoes and Maris Piper and they will be coming very soon and then a video will be coming up of me planting nose so if you're thinking of planting any Christmas potatoes now is the time to think about what you want to plant and get them in the ground Charlotte's our second earli and Maris Piper are main crop so if you're hoping to do main crop for uh Christmas time I think I'm right on that someone will probably correct me in the the comments and say I'm completely wrong I'm pretty sure Maris Piper is main crop and if you're thinking of doing Main crop it's time to get them in you've got to get them in earlier rather than later get them in in um early August the only thing we have to do is protect them from frost but once they get growing you can protect them like it's okay I've always grown Christmas potatoes straight outside and they've done
