Do you have any trips coming up? I'm willing to bet that a lot of you do. It's a busy travel season
and one of the things that always comes up during travel season, what do I wear during travel day?
What do I pack? In this video I want to focus on some simple outfit formulas that you can easily
recreate from pieces in your very own closet for traveling. Hi ladies, it's Erin and welcome back
to my channel. Let's talk travel day and what to wear specifically on those travel days. So for
those of you who don't know, I do travel quite a bit. I mean last year we did a huge trip to the
Middle East, went to Egypt and we went to Israel and we went to Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.
This year we did a big trip to Africa. I've been to Paris. I went to Utah. I know there's more. We
spent six months living in Spain. We've been to Japan. We've been to Iceland. I've been to Thailand
and Bali. Where else have I been? Cambodia. I've been a lot of places and I've traveled a lot. So
I'm gonna weave some packing tips in this video but really I want to focus on those tried and true
go-to travel outfit formulas that I use on travel days. Are you ready? Let's get started. The first
is the sweatsuit and that's just like a matching set. I have on a matching set right now. I'm gonna
talk more about this in a minute but this is like a far cry from the old like juicy velour sweatsuit.
Today's sweatsuits can be incredibly chic, lovely, sophisticated, look like
regular clothing in quotes but also be so insanely comfortable, be really fluid,
be comfortable to sleep in if you're on an overnight international flight and so
these are the things you kind of want to think about. So if you want to go in the area of the
sweatsuit, I want to show you some that I got recently. I partnered with Spanx on the website
and had the opportunity to try their Air Essentials collection which, whoa, I'm so in love. That's
actually what I'm wearing right now. It's one of Oprah's favorite things and it's just a set that
once you put it on you literally never want to take it off and so I have the green, the black,
the fawn and it comes in cropped, it comes in full length, it comes in petite, comes in long
and it's just that the fabric is so soft, so comfy, elastic waistband, totally wrinkle resistant,
very lightweight and also looks very chic. So again we got black, green, fawn which is sort of like a
beigey color and these are amazing. So if you don't already have a sweatsuit that you love,
that you feel like you can travel in, this is a wonderful option. I want to say before we move on
that you can wear a sweatsuit and not have it be the exact same brand. It doesn't have to be
matchy matchy like you could buy an amazing pair of like Viory sweats and then mix it with you know
something that you love on top of cashmere sweater or a long sleeve tee or any kind of jacket and it
doesn't have to be like the same exact brand or a specific set. So you can sort of create your own
sweatsuit, DIY your sweatsuit. The key here with this sweatsuit is that it's probably the most
comfortable option that I'm going to show you. It's also the most casual but I think with the
right pieces, even the casual sweatsuit can look very elevated. So like I just showed you with the
Air Essentials, like I feel like those are all very elevated because of the shape and the silhouette
of the pants and the fit. Okay next up is activewear. So I see a lot of women who post
like the leggings and the blazer and the sneakers and the baseball hat as their travel uniform and
if that is you, that is great. That is not personally my style. So how I would do activewear
when I travel is I would wear a wider leg pant silhouette. So for example these by Beyond Yoga,
they're also a great inseam length for me as a petite woman at 5'4". They also look again
elevated, sophisticated and not exactly like activewear, more like regular clothes. I paired
that with a little wrap front crop sweater and the matching camisole to the pant. So it really
is an activewear set but I'm making it look more elegant with the wrap top, the accessories,
the shoes and then also with that wider leg pant silhouette. So if you want to wear and have the
fit and feel of activewear but you want to elevate it for travel so that it doesn't necessarily look
like activewear, then go with a straight boot or flared yoga pant silhouette. Okay that's your
workaround. That's how you cheat the system. But if you like the look of the activewear and you
want to wear just regular traditional leggings, have at it. I just typically don't travel in
traditional activewear. By the way I talked about this before in I think in one of my Spanish videos
but it wasn't a lot in the bigger capital cities in Europe there's not a lot of activewear being
worn as clothing. That's a real American thing. So that's something to consider if you are traveling
to a major European capital city like Madrid or Paris, Milano which are very stylish cities. They
don't wear a lot of activewear. Okay the next outfit formula that you can pick for travel which
I think would be really casual but also chic is cargo pants in the top. So cargo pants would be
very comfortable and casual but a step up from let's say the leggings or the sweatpants. So
here's an example of a pair of cargo pants that I got fairly recently from Banana Republic. The
nice thing about pants from Banana Republic is they do come in petite, short, and long lengths.
These happen to be a short length. I think these pants are very chic because of the details. Like
you could definitely go more casual on the cargo than these pants. For example I have a pair of
page joggers that I wore on travel day to Africa and it was really one of only two pairs of pants
that I brought on the trip but they're really comfortable. You know the fabric is really soft.
It's a little bit stretchy and that's usually what you're getting with cargo pants. So oftentimes
instead of a jean you may opt for a cargo pant. It can be more comfortable when you're sitting
or lying down on the plane. With these cargo pants by the way I just have on a very basic
but pretty blouse by Velvet. Some eyelet detailing and sandals. When I'm traveling I tend to not wear
open-toe shoes. So I would typically wear sneakers or booties but it's totally up to you. You can
completely wear sandals you know just sort of dependent on you know if you run hot or not
or if you're going somewhere tropical maybe you do want to wear sandals. It's completely up to you.
What I tend to do on travel day with shoes is I'll wear the heaviest pair of shoes
on the plane that isn't a pair of heels because I really don't like to wear heels
while I'm traveling. Although I see many women doing it and like
hats off to you gal. Like I just can't do that. I mean there's just been too many times
especially in the Denver airport man. Anyone else ever go to the Denver airport? It's like
the worst airport in the United States. But there have been many times where me and the family man
are sprinting through that Denver airport and if I had on a pair of white sandals or whatever
I wouldn't make it. You know I'd have to take the shoes off and run through the airport. So
I highly recommend and especially if you're traveling light and you only bring three pairs
of shoes which is what I traditionally bring when I'm carrying on that you wear your heaviest pair
of shoes on the plane. So for example when I went to Africa I wore my Paige joggers. I wore the Sam
Edelman hiking boots or booties on the plane. Now it's not a very traditional travel outfit for me
but it was an outfit that I was going to need and wear over and over and over again while we were
on safari in Africa. By the way I did just do a video on my family's trip to Africa if you're
interested in the details of that or just even to see the animals and hear the stories. It was
such a special experience for me and the family and it was definitely a bucket list trip or a
dream trip realized and so I'm really excited to share that with you and we'll put a link
to the video below in the description box and also up here if you want to watch that one. The
next travel uniform that is so simple so accessible you definitely can recreate it from your closet
but it's also chic and stylish is jeans and a top. It's that simple jeans and a top with either
sneakers or booties. That's really my go-to most of the time. So let me give you a couple of
examples. Here is a pair of wide leg mother jeans I got recently. It's like a 31 inch inseam so it's
really perfect for me at 5'4". With a black top with some open eyelid at the top it's very pretty.
It's billowy so it doesn't cling to the body. Very forgiving and roomy. Keeps you cool. So I love the
top has some interesting detail but it also is very comfy and roomy and and nice for an airplane
right? Another option would be something like this. This is a white blouse. It's long sleeve with a
square neck by Loveshack Fancy. Any white blouse with some detail to it you know this is just one
example. I'm sure you have a pretty white blouse in your closet already. It's awesome for travel
just because you feel like it adds some femininity to your look and adds some pretty. It adds some
style and that's how I want to feel when I'm traveling. I don't want to feel like gross or
grungy. I want to feel like elevated and pretty and excited about the trip ahead and so that's
why I usually look for a blouse with some feminine details. Now I know some of you are going to be
like I can't travel and wear white. That's fine. Just choose the black top. Choose a colored top.
Choose a printed top if you want. I don't mind traveling and wearing white. I usually travel with
a carry-on so I would have another shirt in my carry-on anyway and I had to tell you I've worn
white a ton on my travel days and I don't... I need to like knock on some wood. I just don't spill
stuff on it. I don't know why that is. Like I'm sure some of you just like it doesn't... it just
seems to happen no matter what you do. You spill on white. I just... I just don't have that issue
and if I did, you know, spill something on the white top provided it wasn't like red wine. Not
that I drink red wine but that's the first thing that popped in my head or coffee or something like
that. Just a little spot. I would go into the ladies room, get the cold water and the hand soap,
mix it in my hand and then kind of just spot treat it. Use my fingernail to really spot treat it
and I could probably get it out right there in the bathroom. So anyway, what I'm saying is
if you really love to wear a light bright color like white or off-white, like wear it. Life is
short, you know? Just wear the color, wear the print, wear the white, wear whatever. If not now,
when, right? By the way, I just wanted to mention these pink sneakers with the black top. I got
these fairly recently and they're the exact same sneaker and I've showed you guys before that I
have in black and sort of a taupe color but it's more of a suede-y finish. These have a much
different fabric. It's much more breathable and light so really nice for summer but when I saw
these sneakers in the bright pink, I was like, oh yeah, oh yeah, gotta have those. Super fun but
for sure a specialty piece that I'm, that not many of you are gonna be drawn to. I just happen
to be drawn to pink all the time and love pink so much. It makes me so happy. It's my happy color
so they really spoke to me but you could do any color sneaker here. Just be kind of aware of
whether it's breathable or not, especially during the spring summer months. You're gonna want a shoe
that's breathable. For me personally, if I'm on a really long flight, I'll just take my shoes off
and kind of just let them breathe but to each his own. I don't know what you like to do but for me,
it's important to have a breathable shoe and then once I get on the plane for a longer flight, I
will take my shoes off. Okay, the next travel outfit combo that I really love is the cropped
blazer and jean combo. So a lot of times, I do run colder and for some reason, on airplanes,
I get really freaking cold. It doesn't matter if I'm going somewhere tropical where it's gonna
be 90 degrees. On the plane, I will traditionally get super cold so I like to have layers on the
plane. Layering by the way is great if you're going to Europe in the summer because it can be
like 50 degrees in the morning and 75 degrees during the day and so it's nice to have light
layers that you can peel away or you can add on depending on what the temperature is at that
moment. So in this example, I'm wearing a cropped tan blazer by Mango. My tried and true scarf,
it's by Dior. I've had it for years. A white t-shirt underneath and I do this a lot. I wear
a white t-shirt under a blazer because I can easily again just take the blazer off and have
the white t-shirt. Usually, my white t-shirts have some sort of detail on them. This one in particular
has some smocking in the body. A lot of times, I'll wear a white tee with a little puff shoulder or
puff sleeve. Sometimes, it has a little eyelet detailing. I like a white tee with some detail
but again, I'm not afraid to wear a white tee while I'm traveling. And then on my feet here,
I have on some chunky Chloe sneakers. I showed you guys these sneakers last year when we went
to the Middle East. That's where I wore them probably the most while traveling but I've worn
them a bunch since. I've worn them to lacrosse games for the kids. I wear them like running
errands. What I love about these sneakers is that they have almost a two-inch platform so it gives
you some height which is great for these jeans that have a 31-inch inseam because it just gives
me a little bit of extra height. So the jean length is really perfect with these sneakers.
One thing I will say about these sneakers in particular in case you're interested in getting
a pair, they're not the easiest to get on and off. You have to actually sit down and untie them
and loosen the laces and pull them off whereas some other pairs like the Golden Goose pairs,
you can just slip on and slip off. It's so easy. So that's a consideration. You actually have to
go old school with these Chloe sneakers and tie them up. But you can do any kind of sneaker here,
any kind of sneaker you have. You have some Enclouds. You've got some Nikes. You've got
some New Balance. You've got the Rag & Bone Retro. Whatever sneaker you have, P448, Golden Goose,
just add your sneakers. So I don't want you to think about it in terms of,
I'm going to wear this outfit. Specifically, I want you to think in terms of, oh, I have these
sneakers in my closet and I have these jeans and I have this t-shirt and I have this crop blazer.
This is the look that I can put together, okay? So the next formula is the long blazer with the
jeans versus the crop blazer. And this is a really great look too. And I think it's doable even if
you are on the petite side like me. All you do with your long blazer is you leave it open and
maybe tuck your top in a little bit to highlight the waist. And that's the workaround from keeping
you looking chopped up with the longer blazer. So in this look, I have on some Slim Fit Moosey
jeans, which you all know I love. It's Japanese design. The hemlines are much shorter than
traditional jeans. They work really well on my petite frame. I have on a white tee. Again,
see, I love my white tees under things. And then this really cool off-white Bosch blazer with some
brown buttons. It's oversized so it easily goes over. Like I could do the t-shirt, then I could
do a light sweater, then I could do this blazer. It also would look good with dresses. So that's
another thing to be thinking about when you're considering a layer to add over your top to your
sweater while you're traveling. Is that a layer that you're going to want to wear again and again
and again on your trip? So maybe it's a moto jacket, maybe it's a blazer, maybe it's a little
bomber. Choose something that you feel like you're gonna maximize while you're on your trip.
I wouldn't ever just do a travel outfit as a travel outfit to and from. I would make your
travel outfit part of your travel capsule. And remember I talked about how whenever I'm going
on a big trip, I do mirror selfies. I take pictures of the outfits and then I create a little outfit
album in my iPhone that helps me so much just to get focused on what I actually need and what I
don't need. And I can look and say, ah you know that's a wildcard piece that would require special
shoes or special undergarments and it's not that great anyway so I'm going to skip that piece for
this trip. So that's sort of what the album on the iPhone helps me to delineate when I'm packing for
a trip. By the way if you think I'm crazy, I am a little crazy. I really love to be prepared on a
trip. I really love traveling. I love the sense of adventure. I love how alive I feel when I'm
traveling and I also love to look really chic and pulled together. I really don't like it when I'm
traveling and I don't like my outfits. It doesn't make me feel very good so it's an important part
of the whole experience for me and also leading up to the trip. I'll plan a trip and sometimes
I'll be like oh you know like if I've just had in the back of my mind like Italy, Italy, Italy, Italy
and I'm imagining like a dress with cherries all over it and something sort of Dolce and
Gabbana-ish that really hugs the curves and maybe has a full skirt you know. So oftentimes the travel
will inspire the clothes and that's part of the fun of it for me. I don't know about for you but
for me it is and so I really do take my packing quite seriously. By the way with this outfit I have
the base luggage B-E-I-S. I'm not sure if I'm saying that right. It's really been great for me. I've used
it quite a bit. I alternate between that carry-on which actually is the largest size carry-on that
you can have that's TSA approved. It's like 22 inches and then I also use my Tumi suitcase which
is black. Both are hard shell. The Tumi is a tiny bit smaller than the base. Both are really great.
The Tumi obviously a bit higher quality, more expensive. The nice thing about the base luggage
is that it does have a weekender and bags that go with it that will slide over the handle at the top
so that's really helpful sometimes because if you just have a regular tote on top of your carry-on
it can sort of fall off when you're racing through an airport which has happened to me quite a bit.
So it is nice to have the tote or the weekender that really does connect to the actual carry-on
suitcase. I like to alternate between the two depending on my outfit. Yes I like to match my
suitcase to my outfit. Yes I do. Don't make fun of me. Well actually if you want to make fun of me
that's fine. I don't mind. I make fun of me. One other quick longer blazer outfit I wanted to show
you is this one in white. It's a white blazer with a white t-shirt underneath. Again see the white
t-shirt theme and the reason I wanted to show you this one is because I'm wearing the Rag & Bone
sweatpants. They look like jeans but they're cotton pants and what they did was they created fabric
that actually looks like denim, has the markings of denim, has the like pocket you know steam
stitching like denim but there's no actual physical pocket. They're the best things ever.
So that would be also in the category of I want to feel so comfortable and fluid but I want it to
look like really sophisticated stylish clothing. It's like a sneak attack right? It's not really
like clothing but it sure looks like it. Okay your next travel outfit formula option is a light
jacket and jeans and this is another heavy hitter for me. I do a lot of light jackets with jeans.
I'll do a moto. I'll do a bomber. I'll do a jacket like this which is a utility jacket. This one I
showed you guys recently. It's by Veronica Beard. It is really pricey. To me it was an investment
purchase for the Africa trip. I wore it the entire time I was there. It also was a two-in-one so it's
a longer utility jacket but the bottom zips off so it becomes a crop jacket as well. So I really
love it and think it's a great investment piece. You know utility, cargo, it's classic. It's not going
anywhere. It just happens to be very very on trend right now. I just did a whole video about that
trend by the way which you can watch after this one. We'll put a link below and right up here.
So I do think this is a purchase you could make and consider it an investment piece if you happen
to like this style. So here I have on the Veronica Beard jacket with a white tee, some wide leg mother
jeans, and some Veronica Beard slip-on sandals. Now I probably wouldn't wear these slip-on sandals
on a travel day. I would just swap those out for sneakers or booties. The next combo is a trench
and jeans or you could wear a long cardigan and jeans. You could wear a long wool coat and jeans.
I tend to not wear anything too too long because then you're looking at issues potentially in the
ladies room. There's nothing worse than getting into the ladies room and having something like
drag on the floor. That's like your ultimate you. I'm not a germ phobe or anything but like that
grosses me out totally. So I do like more of a mid-length coat or a mid-length trench. So in
spring summer, you know traditional trench, you might want to have a water resistant one if where
you were going it does rain quite a bit. Classic trench, belted, such a good look. And then if you're
going in the fall winter you could do more of a lightweight wool or cashmere coat. Here's an
example of a sort of wide lapel wool cashmere blend coat that I wore recently on my trip to
Paris. You know black is a very neutral versatile color but then on the other hand my trench is more
of a beige color kind of between beige and tan which is also a very neutral versatile color.
So you can choose which of these color stories you want to go with for your trip. I would suggest
when you're packing really choose a color story. So choose mostly neutral basic colors and neutral
basic pieces and then maybe you add one or two pops of color. Could be with your scarf, could be
with an extra bag, could be with an earring, could be with a lipstick. That's a really easy way to add
some color and some fun to your outfits. But really making sure that everything mixes and matches
together almost like your little mini capsule wardrobe while you're traveling. In this example
this is one of my Madrid trips. It's actually a makeshift sweatsuit I have on a lightweight knit
sleeveless turtleneck with some wide leg knit pants. So it sort of has that same like matching
suit feel. It looks like a matching set but really it's just DIY. It's two pieces I put together for
travel. I've added some easy slip on golden go sneakers and the trench. The beauty of the trench
coat or any kind of wool cashmere coat if it's cooler is that it really will elevate you know
anything that you have on underneath. So you could literally be in a t-shirt and jeans or like sweat
pants and you put that you know slightly tailored coat on and all of a sudden the look is like
you know it's much more elevated. So that's a really beautiful way to travel. I think I really
love that. Again just consider is this a coat that I'm going to wear on the trip? Is this something
that's really going to serve me on the trip? Because you're not going to have room especially
if you're packing lightly to bring a bunch of coats and jackets. So it has to be something that
really will be a heavy hitter on your trip. You could even layer under your trench or your wool
cashmere coat depending on where you're going. Like maybe you want to just put a little like
puffer vest underneath or you put a little air no cap sleeve puffer underneath. You know just
to add another layer so then you have an extra layer of warmth once you get to your destination.
So for example Chris and I are going to be going to Europe soon and I could easily do the trench
with a little air no puffer underneath and then a lightweight sweater and then a t-shirt and a
scarf and then I'm layered up but I also have those layers at my destination which is wonderful.
Again layering is really one of the keys for comfortable travel whether it's on the airplane
or at your destination especially if there are wild swings in temperature. The next travel uniform
you could adopt is the all black uniform and that's going to work pretty much anywhere you're
going. Maybe with the exception of someplace tropical you might not want to wear all black
but if you're going to a European capital city, you're going to Europe in general, you're going to
New York City, you know you're going someplace that feels a little more cosmopolitan. I love to
do an all black look especially if your travel capsule is going to be a black tone or black base
in color. Okay so here's an example of an outfit I might wear traveling that this is I wore recently
in San Francisco. It's a sleeveless black turtleneck with a pair of paper thin leather pants
and these leather pants fit like a glove. They're very breathable. There's some
especially with the vegan leather that makes you feel like you're suffocating and you're sweating.
These don't do that because of the real deal. They're much more breathable but you could easily
swap these out for a pair of black jeans or a pair of black sweats or a pair of black joggers
or black cargos. Cargo pants are very hot right now. So just thinking about that all black uniform
and you could even do your tan trench or your black trench or your black full coat. Cool like
tote bag to use with your carry-on. This one happens to be the Fendi sunshine tote and you're off.
Another option I do like while traveling I just wanted to mention is a two-in-one.
So not necessarily like the VB jacket I talked to you guys about where the bottom zips off but
like a pre-layered piece. So it looks like it's layered but really it's not. So this brochure
walker sweater is an example of brown and white. It looks like it has a silky white shirt underneath
but really this silky white shirt is just a mirage. It's just a facade. It's all sewn in.
So it does keep you really cool which is nice especially if you run hot or maybe you're having
hot flashes. That's an option too especially in the fall winter. By the way with both of these
looks I have on my C by Chloe combat boots. You guys might remember these. I've had them for years
and it's a trend that's been around for a long time that's not showing any signs of slowing down.
It sort of does relate to the whole cargo utility military thing and these happen to be super easy
to get on and off with the zip side zip and they're very cool and they're very comfortable
too. So I've worn them literally all over and I've traveled in them a bunch. Okay the last travel
uniform is a bit of a wild card but I wanted to show you another option and that is a pair of
printed houndstooth pants. These pants are from E&M. They do have elastic waistbands. They're
very comfortable. The hemline is not too long for me and I really appreciate that. I paired that with
a black t-shirt and a black oversized blazer. This one's by Eero and some lug sole combat boots.
So this would be a very thoughtful stylish intentional look that also feels different
than what everybody else is going to wear and even though you know as we've gone through these
combinations and these travel uniforms it is just kind of the same things over and over and over
again. Like jeans and a top. Jeans and a top and a blazer. Jeans and a top and a jacket. Jeans and
a top and a coat. Jeans and a top and a trench. You know it's the same kind of concept. The printed
pant makes it feel really fresh and different. So that's just something you can consider and
especially if you would plan to wear the pants while you're at your destination. So these pants
are insanely comfortable. Again elastic waistband, soft, really cool, really fun, really interesting
and then just paired them also with some black oversized sunglasses by Gucci
and those C by Chloe combat boots. Okay so let's recap the travel uniforms. You've got the
sweatsuit, you've got the activewear, cargo pants and a top, jeans and a top, crop blazer and jeans,
long blazer and jeans, a light jacket and jeans, the trench and jeans, all black and the interesting
pants and blazer. Which one of these is your favorite? Which one of these do you feel most
comfortable in? Which one of these have you tried? Did I miss anything? Do you have any more packing
or travel questions? Again we travel a lot so I do have a lot of information about packing. I pack
