It's a question I get a lot.
Dan, what are the best islands to buy a short-term vacation rental?
I bet you want to know and I'm telling you coming up next.
Hi, I'm Dan Palomino with KW Big Island and the Hawaii team.
Well, today we are answering a very common question that we get
and one that I just got about two days ago, which is,
Dan, what are the best islands in Hawaii to buy a short-term vacation rental?
Now, full disclosure, I am a little biased because I live on the Big Island
and I love the Big Island and I love everything that's so unique about it.
But with that said, I'm going to try to be objective and give you just the facts.
Let's start with where I think you should avoid.
And unfortunately, I'm going to say Maui right now.
And the reason for that is because the mayor, Bisson, the governor,
the county council, they are all on this mission right now
to provide more housing for the Lahaina fire survivors.
And we can all understand that.
But the way they're going about it is that they're looking to
get rid of all of the short-term vacation rentals on the island.
They think they've got a way to eliminate that and take away people's property rights.
I'm pretty convinced that they don't
and that's going to get immediately challenged in court.
But they're going to try.
They're going to try anyway to do this.
And so if I'm you and I'm thinking about a short-term vacation rental,
I'm probably not picking Maui given the turmoil that's going on there right now.
Secondly, Mayor Blangiardi in Honolulu,
he has been on a crusade to get rid of short-term vacation rentals.
They tried once, they failed in court, but that doesn't mean that they're done.
They are going to still try to put the screws to short-term vacation rentals.
And so I would avoid that.
Which then leaves us with Kauai and the Big Island.
And when you're talking about those two specific islands,
the first thing you need to know is wet versus dry.
In Kauai, if you're on the Princeville side, it's the wet side.
The Poipu side is the dry side.
That's probably where you want to look for a short-term vacation rental.
On the Big Island, the Hilo side, the Hamakua coast is the wet side.
And then the Kona side is the dry side.
And that's where you want to look for a short-term vacation rental.
As you've heard me say, there's six resorts on the west side of the island
from Kohanaiki to Mauna Kea.
Each has its own unique properties about rentals.
For instance, in Kohanaiki, you can't do short-term vacation rentals,
nor can you in Kokio.
But you can in Hualalai Four Seasons, Waikoloa Beach, Maunalani, Mauna Kea.
Again, you don't need to know all of this.
We have all of this information.
We're the experts.
We will help and guide you in a strategic direction for that short-term vacation rental.
The next question is, well, what about pricing?
And to be quite honest with you, Kauai and the Big Island are pretty close in pricing.
It really will just come down to a matter of preference.
But if I'm you, look at those two islands
if you're interested in buying a short-term vacation rental.
And of course, if we can help you at any time,
we would love to earn your business.
