Climat in Bourgogne is extremely important.
I even think that it's the base of the philosophy of winemaking in Bourgogne.
All the wines that are produced in Bourgogne are based on that climat concept, as climat
enables the diversity of the expressions of the different wines of Bourgogne.
You know that we have a single grape varietal, which is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay,
and all the different nuances, all the difference that we can find in different wines
made in Bourgogne come from that diversity of climat.
Well, the names of climat may have different origins.
First of all, a topographical or geographical origin, like Caillerais, for instance.
Caillerais is a field of cailloux, of stones.
So we mean that the soil was very rich in chalk, so like Caillerais.
Some would have also aristocratic origins, like Chevalier-Morachet or Bâtard-Morachet,
for instance.
It's a good story to remember the different, the best cruises of Puy-de-Nime-Morachet.
So we have the lord, Le-Morachet, so everything starts during the crusade.
And Le-Morachet, the lord of Morachet, decides to go and fight in crusade.
And he leaves the village and tells his Chevalier, which is a knight,
to protect La Pucelle, which is a young lady.
And of course, love is always very powerful.
And the Chevalier has a love affair, absolutely.
He's truly in love with La Pucelle.
And of course, after a few months, comes a lovely baby.
But of course, when the lord, Le-Morachet, comes back from crusade,
he's a bit surprised and disappointed.
And so, La Pucelle shows the Bâtard-Morachet, the bastard,
to the lord, to Le-Morachet, Bâtard-Morachet.
And of course, Le-Morachet looks at the baby and he's not very happy.
And the baby feels it and starts to cry.
Crio, Bâtard-Morachet.
And after that, Lord Morachet, because he has a great heart
and had no children before,
ends by welcoming this Bâtard and welcoming in French is Bienvenue.
Bienvenue, Bâtard-Morachet.
So with this little story, you have all the Grands Crus,
which are produced in Punini-Morachet,
Morachet, Chevalier-Morachet, Bâtard-Morachet,
Bienvenue, Bâtard-Morachet.
At Domaine Jean Chartrand,
we are very lucky to be able to vinify 20 different climats.
And we even vinify separately our original wines, depending on the plots.
So you'll have a Bourgogne Chardonnay Lacombe, for instance,
coming from a vineyard, Lacombe, which is in the center of the village
with a little more chalk,
so making an elegant type of wine, very focused.
And we have another Bourgogne Chardonnay, Le Poirier,
coming from outside of the village,
where there is more clay in the soil
and making a wine which is slightly richer.
So we have here two different soils,
two different lilies and two different expressions of Chardonnay.
And that's very important to us.
And that's also very important to our clients.
And that's the magic of Bourgogne.
