Air on the G String (Bach)
"Air on the G String" is from German composer Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major (BWV 1068). The piece is the second movement, known as the "Air," and was composed by Bach for Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau between 1717 and 1723.
In the late 19th century, German violinist August Wilhelmj adapted the piece for violin and piano, transposing the original key of D major to C major and lowering the melody by one octave, allowing the music to be played exclusively on the violin's G string.
