In recent years, the number of young people in the United States who have come to China to study has dropped sharply,
from nearly 250,000 people 10 years ago to less than 1,000 people now.
Analysts believe that the main reason is that the CCP has strengthened social control and foreign investment evacuation.
Young people in the United States are not optimistic about China's economic environment, employment prospects and environment,
and the desire to return to China to study is fragile.
On July 4, the Wall Street Journal reported that after China's strict epidemic prevention measures ended at the end of 2022,
including when Xi Jinping and Biden met in November 2023,
they hoped to attract 50,000 American students to China in the next five years,
but the speed of American students returning to China is slow.
For example, Professor Wu Xingbo of Fudan University has been teaching Chinese foreign policy classes for 10 years.
Before the epidemic, one-third of his students were usually Americans,
and in 2023, there was no American in his class.
According to data from the International Education Association,
more than 110,000 Americans studied in China in the last school year before the epidemic,
and U.S. Ambassador to China Burns said in a speech in June this year that
there were about 800 American students in China.
Experts believe that the number of international students going to China will probably decrease.
According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Education,
more than 10 years ago, the number of American students in China was close to 25,000.
After 2012, the number has declined, and for many years it has been stable at more than 11,000.
At the end of 2019, the CCP's virus outbreak broke out.
The CCP's three-year strict lockdown policy
has caused a large number of foreigners, including American students, to leave.
At the end of 2022, the CCP will be unsealed, and many people will no longer return to China.
According to a report released by the Chinese Tourism Research Institute,
the number of tourists to China in 2023 has only recovered to less than 10% in 2019,
and the number of Americans returning to China is even less than half.
The CCP has been harassing Western companies,
taking many policies that are not conducive to Western investment in China.
This has caused all Western big companies to leave China.
Since Western big companies have all left China,
of course, fewer and fewer Americans are willing to come to China to learn Chinese.
In recent years, the CCP has continued to tighten its control of society.
Last year, it amended the Anti-espionage Act to expand the scope and execution power,
and launched a search and arrest of foreign companies operating in China.
In February this year, it also amended the Conservative National Secrecy Act
to expand the scope of control, and accelerate the escape of foreign businessmen.
The Anti-espionage Act has caused Western big companies to be mainly managed in China,
and their personal safety has been threatened.
Of course, there is also the Chinese economic downturn.
The CCP's unfriendly attitude to foreign investment in China
has caused Western big companies to leave China.
This is the main reason why the number of students from the United States to China has fallen.
There is no job opportunity.
You learn Chinese, and you know China.
What's the use of knowing?
Lan Shu said, young people studying abroad,
the first thing he considers is the future of employment.
If his future in China is not good,
it will be more difficult to find a job in the United States with a Chinese degree.
Then why would he go to China?
Xi Jinping encouraged 50,000 Americans to go to China.
It seems that China can only accept a large number of students from Africa.
This is not good for China's international image.
And this is not what the CCP really wants.
He hopes to cultivate a group of students who have a good impression of China in Western society.
But now the purpose is not achieved.
At present, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning on travel to China.
It is recommended that Americans reconsider going to China and Hong Kong.
The reason is that there is a problem of arbitrary enforcement,
including banning travel, and the risk of unlawful detention.
