On Wednesday afternoon Xiao Qi Ji appeared displeased with his selection of bamboo. Keep in mind the keepers give him multiple varieties of bamboo, as well supplemental treats. But sometimes a bear doesn't like their selection (even if they were his absolute favorites yesterday!) So rather than sit and eat boo, Qi Ji took multiple dips in his pools, sat in the water bowls at the top of the rockwork, played with his bamboo and the broken pvc pipe donut, as well as wall walked and anointed. Some of the behaviors he displayed (the somersault up by the water bowl atop room 3's rockwork and his upside down dismount from room 3's rockwork) are behaviors he's displayed for many, many months, and are a type of anticipatory behavior. ("The ability to predict regular events can be adaptive for nonhuman animals living in an otherwise unpredictable environment. Animals may exhibit behavioral changes preceding a predictable event; such changes reflect anticipatory behavior.")

Earlier yesterday I had wanted to find some "old" footage showing Qi Ji using his enrichment item as a step up to the window in the door ... and voila! Qi Ji did that behavior during this "teenage tantrum" (although adults also display displeasure when they don't like their selection of bamboo, but they usually aren't as physically demonstrative as our youngster Qi Ji!) He really is quite smart, as well as totally spoiled!
