Mauritius Airport Tips
Arriving at Sir Siwusagaramgulam International Airport, the primary gateway to Mauritius,
it's important to plan for a smooth transition to your accommodation.
The airport is well-equipped with car rental agencies,
and the journey to the mainland tourist areas takes about an hour.
A typical taxi fare to the Grand Bailly costs about 40 USD.
Where to Stay in Mauritius
Mauritius boasts a variety of accommodations to suit any preference.
The Grand Bailly area is perfect for travelers looking for vibrant nightlife
and close proximity to sandy beaches with hotel prices ranging from 150 to 300 USD per night.

where luxury resorts offer stunning views of the iconic Le Morne Brabant,
with prices ranging from 200 to 400 USD per night.
How to Get Around Mauritius
Navigating Mauritius is both convenient and exciting.
Encapsulating the islands, diverse landscapes from bustling city streets to serene coastal roads,
renting a car is highly recommended and costs around 25 USD per day,
giving you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Alternatively, the Mauritian bus system offers an affordable way to travel,
with extensive coverage and fares typically under 2 USD per trip.
For those looking to add a touch of luxury, taxi services are widely available,
though it's advisable to agree on the fare in advance.
Day 1 – North Mauritius
Morning – Grand Bailly
Begin your exhilarating week in Mauritius by exploring the vibrant northern part of the island.
Why start in the north coast?
It's arguably the most captivating region in Mauritius,
bustling with activity and ideal for acclimatizing to the island vibes.
Destinations like Cap Mallory, Peribert, Grand Bailly, and the beaches of Mont Choisy and
Port-au-Bichers offer a perfect kick-off to your Mauritius adventure.
Grand Bailly, once a quaint fishing village and now a lively seaside resort,
is particularly noteworthy.
It's a hub for expatriates and buzzes with energy, especially in the evenings.
The beach is a scenic spot with its array of colorful boats,
making it a picturesque introduction to the island.
Lunch – For lunch, head to Eat With Fingers on 20 Pieds Road,
slightly off the main area of Grand Bailly.
It offers a gourmet and healthy menu.
Though not typically Mauritian fare, a meal here costs about $15 USD per person.
After lunch, a 10-kilometer, 6-mile drive leads you to Peribert Beach
for a refreshing swim on its crystal-clear waters.
Late Afternoon – In the late afternoon, make your way to Cap Mallory.
This northernmost tip of the island presents an awe-inspiring scene with its iconic red-roofed
church set against the lush greenery, azure sea, and sky.
It's one of the most picturesque spots in Mauritius,
perfect for an unforgettable sunset viewing.
Dinner – Before you leave Grand Bailly for the evening,
consider dining at The Boathouse, a beloved local eatery right by the sea.
Indulge in their seafood platter featuring the freshest catch of the day,

Steer clear of the city during rush hours 8.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m.,

Also, remember to carry water, sunscreen,
and a hat to stay comfortable under the Mauritian sun.

Find a cozy spot on the white sandy shores under the shade of coconut trees,
and let the serene atmosphere wash over you.
The beach's translucent and shallow waters are not only perfect for a relaxing swim,
but also ideal for snorkeling.
A Brief Detour to Belmar
If you're enthralled by tropical beaches,
make a quick five-minute drive to the more secluded Belmar Beach.
It's a wilder, less-frequented alternative offering a more intimate connection with nature.

For lunch, visit Sam's Grill on Ilusir.
Enjoy fresh grilled seafood or a local Creole dish.
With meals typically costing around $25 USD,
the ocean view adds a special touch to your dining experience.

offering stunning views of the crystal-clear waters.
A round-trip ticket costs about $15 USD.
Once on Ilusir, you're greeted by a magical landscape of white sands and endless turquoise seas.
While it's a popular spot, the beauty and range of activities are worth the crowd.
Enjoy various water sports such as parasailing, water skiing,
and riding a towed buoy, with activities generally ranging from $20 to $50 USD.

This beach is one of the most beloved in Mauritius, distinguished by its line of philaus,
Mauritian pines, that not only create a picturesque landscape,
but also provide delightful shade for a peaceful rest while you gaze over the turquoise lagoon.
The beach offers a variety of activities from relaxing swims and sunbathing
to snorkeling among vibrant, multicolored fish. Additionally, numerous scuba diving
centers are available around the beach if you're looking to dive deeper into the marine life.

Day 5 Le Morne Brabant and Le Morne Beach
Prepare for another day immersed in nature as you transition from the verdant expanses of
Black River Gorges Park to a challenging yet rewarding hike up Morne Brabant.
Morning Hiking Morne Brabant
After experiencing the lush landscapes of the Black River Gorges, gear up for a hike to Morne
Located in the southwest, this mountain is not only the most iconic on the island,
but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
The hike to the summit and back typically takes about 3-4 hours.
Some paths can be steep, and parts of the trail nearly reach climbing difficulty.
This trek is exhilarating, but may be challenging for those with a fear of heights.
To enhance your experience and safety, consider hiring a professional guide.
A guide not only ensures your safety, but also enriches your hike with stories
about the region's history. The cost for a guide is around $40 USD.
The summit offers a breathtaking panorama, a true testament to Mauritius' natural beauty.
The historical and emotional significance of Le Morne Brabant adds depth to your visit.
The mountain was a refuge for escaped slaves,
symbolized by the stone cross at the peak dedicated to their memory.
Lunch
After descending, refuel at the Mountain View Cafe located near the base of the mountain.
Enjoy a light meal like a fresh salad or grilled chicken, typically costing around $15 USD,
while you relish the views of the mountain you just conquered.
Afternoon Relaxing at Le Morne Beach
After hiking, unwind on the tranquil Le Morne Beach.
This beach is wilder and more serene compared to the northern beaches or flicking flack,
offering a perfect spot for relaxation. It's an ideal place to reflect on the day's journey
and soak in the peaceful ocean vibes.
Dinner
Conclude your day with dinner at the Beachside Bistro right on Le Morne Beach.
Indulge in a seafood platter featuring local catches like lobster and calamari for about $30 USD.
Dining with the sand between your toes and the sound of the waves
creates a sublime ending to your adventurous day.
Day 6 Grand Basin and Chemel Il
Embark on the sixth and penultimate day of your vacation, ready to delve further
into the southwest of Mauritius, a region rich with cultural and natural treasures.
Here's a road trip itinerary I've created based on my own explorations,
ensuring you experience the best this part of the island has to offer.
Morning Spiritual start at Grand Basin,
Konya Telau
Begin your day heading towards Grand Basin, also known as Konya Telau.
This sacred lake is a central pilgrimage site for Mauritian Hindus and impresses
with its giant statues of the gods Shiva and Durga at the entrance.
The Durga statue is the largest of its kind in the world.
Explore the serene area, visit several temples, receive a tika on your forehead,
and enjoy interactions with the friendly wild monkeys that roam freely.
This cultural immersion is a profound experience not to be missed.
Midmorning Plain Champagne and Alexandra Falls
Continue south to Plain Champagne, where locals gather Chinese guavas towards the end of the year.
If you visit during guava season, you might pick some of these sweet-sour fruits yourself.
Just up the road, make a stop at Alexandra Falls, a breathtaking natural site worth the detour.
Lunch Around noon,
stop for lunch at Chamarel Restaurant near the Seven-Colored Earth.
Enjoy a meal of traditional Mauritian curry and rice,
costing around $15 USD, in a setting that complements the rustic charm of the area.
Afternoon Seven-Colored Earth of Chamarel
Next, visit the Seven-Colored Earth of Chamarel, a fascinating geological formation with naturally
multicolored volcanic sands. The entrance fee to this private estate is about $10 USD,
but the stunning views and unique landscape are invaluable.
Insider Tip
If you find yourself with some extra time, visit the curious corner of Chamarel.
Located right next to the entrance to the Seven-Colored Earth,
this museum of optical illusions offers a fun and fascinating experience,
particularly enjoyable for families with children. Entrance fees are around $8 USD per person.
Late Afternoon Ebony Forest Nature Reserve
Also within the same estate, explore the Ebony Forest Nature Reserve.
A roughly two-hour walk through this native forest offers not only a rich display of biodiversity,
but also panoramic views of the valley from Sublime Point.
Evening Rue Marie de Chamarel
Conclude your road trip with a visit to the Rue Marie de Chamarel.
Take a guided tour of the distillery, learn about the rum-making process,
and enjoy a tasting session. The cost for the tour and tasting is about $20 USD.
This experience is a delightful way to understand why Mauritian rum is so revered.
Dinner Wrap up your day with Dinner
at the Alchemist near Chimel Inn. Savor a gourmet meal with dishes like grilled octopus or lamb
curry, typically priced around $30 USD. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere provides the
perfect setting for reflecting on your adventurous day.
Day 7 Southeast Coast
As your week in Mauritius draws to a close, it's hard to believe how quickly the time has passed.
To ensure your final day is unforgettable, I suggest exploring two exceptional locations,
Maybrook and Blue Bay.
Morning Cultural Immersion at Maybrook
Start your day in Maybrook, the island's first city established by Dutch settlers and a must
according to any local. Maybrook's unique atmosphere, which feels a bit timeless and
entirely different from the rest of Mauritius, offers a perfect backdrop for cultural immersion.
Stroll along the scenic seafront and wander through cobbled streets,
admiring old Creole houses and soaking in the city's roots vibe.
The pace here seems slower, making it an ideal place to unwind and reflect on your journey.
Insider Tip
Visit the Maybrook Historical Naval Museum in the morning to deepen your
understanding of the city's rich history. The entry fee is about $5 USD. It's a great
way to start your day with some insightful background before you lose yourself in the
beauty of the city and its surroundings.
Lunch
For lunch, stop by Chez Patrick in the heart of Maybrook. Enjoy traditional Mauritian cuisine,
such as a hearty seafood curry accompanied by rice and local chutneys, costing about $12 USD.
Dining in this rustic setting provides a true taste of local life.
Afternoon
Relaxation at Blue Bay
After lunch, make your way to Blue Bay, particularly to the stunning Pont d'Izni beach,
which I consider the best on the island. The pristine beach and its breathtaking lagoon
are perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The clear, cold waters of Blue Bay are ideal for snorkeling,
rich with vibrant marine life. Snorkeling gear can be rented for around $10 USD,
and guided snorkeling tours are available for about $20 USD,
providing insights into the best spots and local marine ecology.
Dinner
Conclude your day and your trip with a beachside dinner at Blue Bay Beach Restaurant.
Choose from their specialty dishes like grilled lobster or fish, which will cost around $30 USD.
Dining with the sound of the waves and a sunset view will provide a memorable
end to your magnificent week in Mauritius. Thanks for joining us on this spectacular
journey through Mauritius. We hope you're as enchanted by its stunning landscapes and
rich culture as we are. Don't forget that insider tip we promised. Always check local
event calendars for festivals. They're a fantastic way to experience true Mauritian hospitality.
