ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CITY. Let's explore a more than 3000-year-old settlement located on Luxor's west bank. The village of Deir el-Medina was home to the ancient Egyptian masons, craftsmen, and artisans responsible for the decoration and construction of almost all New Kingdom tombs. During the time span of 400 years - between the sixteenth century BCE and the eleventh century BCE this planned settlement was growing and in its heyday (during the Ramesside period) housed around 400 people. The village was commissioned by the 18th dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep I and consecutively supported by his successors; among them the most famous kings of the New Kingdom: Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun, Seti I, Ramesses the Great or Ramses III.
