This Tuesday, Houston Zoo's 40-year-old Asian elephant, Tyce,
was vaccinated with the first mRNA vaccine developed by the Baylor Institute of Virology
to prevent the deadly HIV-EHV-EA in the elephant's body.
This virus is lethal to Asian elephants.
This breakthrough is the result of a long-term collaboration between
the Baylor Institute of Virology and the Pauling Laboratory of Microbiology.
Tyce is the mother of four elephants.
She is currently in good condition after being vaccinated.
Over the next few weeks,
the Houston Zoo will closely monitor the effectiveness of the vaccine,
including assessing the level of antibodies in her blood,
and monitoring its side effects or adverse reactions.
The zoo is also planning to vaccinate the herd of cows in the zoo.
This vaccine plan will also be provided to other elephants,
including those raised by humans and wild elephants.
In the past 15 years,
research into the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the EHV virus
has made significant progress
to help save the elephants in North America, Europe, and other regions.
