The first reference to the Symphony in Mozart's Köchel catalogue (KV 504) is an entry dated 6 December 1786. Work on the last movement had already begun in the spring of 1786, but was then interrupted - apparently due to commitments to other commissions - and only resumed in connection with the other movements. It is unclear for what purpose Mozart wrote the symphony, perhaps for a Viennese academy or for a performance abroad. The invitation to Prague from a "society of great connoisseurs and lovers" (letter from Leopold Mozart to Nannerl dated 12 January 1787) came after the work had been completed, and is therefore unlikely to have been the impetus for its composition. However, Cliff Eisen (1991) suggests that Mozart may have composed the symphony for the trip to Prague.
