During the Baroque period in particular, the most influential musical innovations often came about more or less by accident, as composers used the materials at their disposal to best meet an immediate practical need.
George Frideric Handel's invention of the organ concerto as an adjunct to performances of his massive oratorios is just such a case -- Handel simply used his legendary skill at the keyboard to entertain his paying audience while the singers took their much-needed intermission. And so the first real concertos for organ and orchestra in history seemed to serve no inescapable artistic purpose, but rather a simple commercial expedient; that the works are still so satisfying almost 300 years later is a tribute to the composer's inexhaustible creativity.
