In its pursuit of excellence in automotive design and craftsmanship, Mazda has always maintained a deep love for the past and Japanese traditions. Today, the automaker fuses its design philosophy with lacquer techniques derived from Japanese traditions to create the stunning Mazda Takuminuri technology.
Urushi art is an art form that originated in Japanese tradition and has been developed in East Asia for thousands of years. This art combines beauty with functionality, protecting objects while also giving them a decorative aspect by applying layers of lacquer sap to their surfaces. The appearance of lacquerware is as soft as leather and attracts the eyes. It shows the essence of ancient Japanese traditional crafts and also meets the needs of modern society for environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.
Sumac is a unique tree species that only grows in East Asia, and its sap is carefully processed for use in lacquerware. This sap absorbs moisture from the air as it dries, forming an aesthetically pleasing and corrosion-resistant coating with excellent protective properties.
Mazda's artisan lacquer technique is a complex art that tests the artist's patience and skill. It involves applying dozens of thin layers of paint to the object's surface, allowing several days to dry between each layer, before the artist sands it down to a final thickness of 0.03mm. Naoya Takayama is an award-winning artist from Hiroshima known for his masterly use of the "Akebono-Nuri" technique to create multi-layered black and red gradients. "The real technology is behind the way everyone expresses this complex texture," he said.
To accentuate details and enhance the depth of color during the manufacturing process, Mazda has introduced Takuminuri robotic paint technology. Takuminuri robotics apply lacquer effects in layers of paint by highly precisely imitating the artist's touch and technique. This technology provides Mazda vehicles with richer depth, enhanced reflections and a striking aesthetic.
In 2022, Takuminuri celebrates its 10th anniversary with the launch of an eye-catching new color – Artisan Red. Reminiscent of mature wines, this extraordinary red has been crafted with unrivaled craftsmanship. Artisan Red joins Mazda's premium range of exterior colors, which include Soul Red Crystal, Polymetal Gray and Rhodium White. These colors are all composed of transparent layers, translucent paint layers and reflective/absorbing layers, creating a striking effect that emphasizes the expression of strength and beauty.
Mazda recognizes the virtuosity of Alpine paint artisans who rely on the intricate balance of eye and hand to add color and polish. "Japanese lacquerware is made of natural materials and is a wise choice for those who are environmentally conscious," Takayama said. Lacquer art embodies the common Japanese aesthetic concept that the work has independent vitality and autonomy. If a piece of lacquerware is damaged, lacquer craftsmen will give it new life. Using an ancient restoration technique known as kintsu, they fuse together fragments and cracks with the powerful bonding properties of lacquer, and employ gold and other metals to create a new art form of expression and perception.
The introduction of Mazda craftsman technology has enabled Mazda vehicles to achieve outstanding achievements in the fields of design and craftsmanship. This unique creativity, infused with traditional Japanese lacquer techniques, gives Mazda vehicles a distinctive aesthetic and environmental sustainability, while underscoring the brand's commitment to detail and exceptional quality.
