Hey skaters, it's Stace here from Next Step Tutorials and this lesson today
we're going to be looking at five unique entries that you can use for your flip jump.
All right, so when it comes to the flip jump the standard entries that I normally see every
skater do straight line c-step flip jump or a straight line three turn flip jump. Well in this
lesson today I'm going to be showing you more options that you can use into your flip jump
and yes they might be a bit tricky but that's the whole point of skating to always challenge
ourselves a bit more. I'm also not going to be speaking about flip jump technique. This is a
completely different lesson. Today the main focus will be the entries into the flip jump. So before
we jump into this first entry let's just take a look at the standard flip jump and the two entries
I normally see. So the first one is just skating forwards and then they go c-step flip jump
and then the other one is skating forwards three turn flip jump. So those are the two standard
entries that we tend to do when doing a flip jump. Now let's take a look at our first entry that we're
going to learn. All right this first entry is going to be multiple three turns into your flip
jump and on those multiple three turns I'm going to be turning on my left leg. So you're going to
see me do three turn three turn three turn three turn and then pick it up with a flip jump. Now you
want to also make sure on these three turns that they are nice and drawn out. They aren't really
really fast and tight because we aren't creating a spin. We want to do a jump so we want to make
sure I see each three turn and that beautiful edge on each one. So let's take a look at this.
Okay now I'm going to start backwards and now I'm going to push back and here I'm going to do
multiple three turns and then pick it up. Now with that you didn't see me do tight three turns
turn turn turn turn and it's going to create such a spin that you won't be able to do the flip
jump. So just make sure when you're doing these three turns that you feel the forward outside,
the back inside, the forward outside glide, then the back inside glide. It's so important and then
that you keep a strong position. Try not to move around your body. You have to control this free
leg. From that push I'm controlling that three that free leg. As I turn underneath it's not going
in front back front back that creates too much of a whip around. All right before we jump into our
next entry I want you to click on the link below in the description for your free pdf guide on the
four turns that we have in figure skating because you might have noticed that I've used some of those
turns before our flip jump and you might want a little bit more knowledge on them. So check out
our free pdf guide. All right our second entry that we're going to use into the flip jump will be
carousels or you might call them scotty turns. It also can get really spinny so what you have to do
is think about control before you take off for that flip jump. So let's go. All right so I'm
going to think about nice and controlling those shoulders. See how it can get a bit spinny but if you
control your shoulders you're going to be able to do the flip. So with each scotty turn or carousel
then after I step I feel that control before I take off for that flip jump. So that is your second
entry that you can use. All right our third entry that we're going to be using is going to be a half
loop. So I'm going to do a three turn step down half loop flip and then I'm also going to do
a waltz jump half loop flip jump. So let's take a look at it. Okay so this first entry is going to be
hold here's that three turn that I spoke about half loop flip. So that's one entry but I'm also
going to show you with a waltz jump because normally at competitions you'll see it used
they might do a loop jump half loop flip or a flip half loop salchow. So it's just a different
entry that you can also use. So I'm going to get a little bit of speed here and I'm going to do a
waltz jump half loop flip. One thing while doing this you always want to make sure that you keep
a rhythm throughout. You don't want to get stuck. You don't want to do half loop hold hold hold hold
then flip jump. You want to keep a nice rhythm while doing this entry. Now our fourth entry that
we're going to use into a flip jump will be a cha cha or an s step back outside counter
three turn flip jump. Yes this is definitely a bit harder to do but it's something that you can
work towards because if you can already do a c step or a three turn challenge yourself a bit more.
So let's take a look at it. All right so I'm going to do some inside edges just to give me
some rhythm and here's that s step counter three turn flip jump. Now I didn't tell you beforehand
when I was talking about this entry but I like to do some inside edges just to give me some rhythm
so that I have nice rhythm throughout these more challenging steps. Now we're going to do this one
more time together because it is definitely more challenging. So I'm going to build some speed with
those inside edges and also keep rhythm. So I'm here getting some nice rhythm then I go s step
counter turn three turn flip jump. When I do this my edges aren't super deep like you don't see me
this s step and then this big pull of a counter turn and then three turn they are a bit more flat
you still want to maintain your edges but as you can see I don't have this counter turn
that rips around and then into that flip jump. So that's one way that I keep rhythm my edges aren't
super deep. Now our last entry that we're going to be looking at is going to be a right forward
inside counter hop c step or mohawk pick it up with that flip jump. So let's take a look at this
now we're going to do a counter hop up and out. Now that one was a right forward inside counter
then I jump from this right to left then a mohawk or c step pick it up flip. This is probably one of
my favorite entries to use into the flip. I love the feeling of the edges yes they aren't super
deep they're a bit more shallow counter then I get my shoulders working then I do the c step
and then pick it up with flip. So let's take a look at it one more time okay so we have counter
hop and c step up flip. So definitely by far this is my favorite entry to use into the flip jump
make sure on that counter turn that shoulders go before you make that counter turn and then
shoulders again and then you're ready to go step into that flip jump. All right those are your five
entries that you can use into your flip jump. Now I didn't dive in and talk about flip jump
technique at all this was all about the entries because it is really good to make sure that you
challenge yourself as a skater. Yes can you imagine if a chef only cooked that one meal
every single time they wouldn't be a good chef they try different things it's what improves them
so it's the same thing for skating you must improve your skating so definitely
challenge yourself. Thanks for watching next set tutorials and happy skating!
