How William Bouguereau entered the Academy ?

Born in the city of La Rochelle, a charming village on the French atlantic coast, in the start of the 19th century, William Bougeureau was brought up in a family where the economy was on and off a disaster, forcing him to live with his uncle Eugene. William loved to learn and read a lot of history books, from ancient Greece to the old and the new testament. A strong faith had started to awaken and he first wanted to become a priest, to which he also studied, but when given his first introduction to art, he could simply not let it go.

In his fathers shop, you could see him sitting there, studying art and also drawing sketches when there were no customers. One of the regular customers, Charles Marionneau, by chance saw the sketches of William and helped him to get into the art school in Bordeaux.
